This certainly brightened my spirits to the whole no GPL engine
situation. Check out the interview for yourself at

"However, given the limited commercial success of Grand Prix Legends, its
clear that we would be doing a disservice to our core NASCAR? Racing fans if
we released NASCAR? Racing 3 with the same degree of difficulty and steep
learning curve."

That's what they say, but how do they come to think, that the reason for
limited commercial success was the difficulty of the game?
Hey, they excluded all users of D3D-Cards, thats the reason!!!

I could not buy GPL because I have a D3D-Card und I would not have wanted
it, 'cause GPL does not support FF.

And I guess it would not be too difficult, to castrate the GPL engine a
little for the arcaders and leave it untouched as an option for the
simulators...

Last not least, I don't believe, arcaders will be very keen on playing
NASCAR? games, if I play arcade, I wonna have real fun with a fantasy kind
of game, like Speed Busters or NICE2 or maybe Midtown Madness (don't know it
by now).

Zolli
(who would really love to drive NAScars with the GPL engine and FF, 'cause
he's not a real fan of Monoposti...)

When I read that, I could just imagine the PR woman coaching the
programmers how to say this and sound convincing.
Imagine you programmed the most realistic game engine ever, then told
that using it would be a disservice.

The frame rate issue while running with a large field is the ONLY
thing I can think of that would prevent a GPL based NASCAR game from
being better in every way from one using the N2 engine.

I do agree with you that is was rather short-sighted not to include
D3D support in GPL, but D3D probably didn't become a viable option
until well into GPL's development.

When they mentioned that the system requirements would be way too steep for
most of the customers at this time, I was actually pleased to read that. I
give them credit for not making the customers have to go upgrade to P3's,
etc. or whatever just to play their game. Too many times, the software
companies push the requirements on entertainment titles to where customers
get maybe one good year of use from their pc's before a need to upgrade.
Knowing that the game's requirements are too much for most of their
customers' machines is a responsible approach, IMO.

As for the driving model, well that's another story.
