some very good answers to my original query, most of which I have
investigated. The central point is that unitl the CPU swap, the thing
was running perfectly in all games. Now i have these problems. It
seems to point the finger at the updated BIOS I think .......

I've got a Fortissimo2 here and GPL works great, no probs at all.

Puuhh,
had the same prob on a XP 1500, solved it awhile ago.
I made thousands of adjustments and don't really remember what did the trick.
Iirc, downgrading my nvidia drivers to 21.83 was a good idea. Also trying some
different slots for the SBlife.
Anyhow, for some cleanup take out the sblife and erase whatever programs are
refering to it. Also clean out the registry. Then reinstall *not* from the
retail CD but only the latest WWW-download (quite old already, but working for
my Win98-setup).

I had the exact same problems with my Fortissimo II, whenever I tried
to use it in GPL, I'd have a lockup within 2 or 3 laps. I ended up
ditching that as well as my SB and using the onboard audio for my MSI
KT333A based mobo, I think it's an Avance AC/97. I get some ***
popping sometimes from the sound, but at least it works....

Are you using the most up to date drivers with this? I recently
installed the newish drivers from Hercules, and now every time I have
an off (quite frequent, still learning!) the sound goes into a 1-2
second loop and the game stalls - I have to ctrl-alt-del...

Hercules Fortissimo II etc etc)

I the latest drivers but it was during the summer. They didn't help.
