Massive disco's this weekend

by Markus Stiepe » Mon, 21 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I'm kinda frustrated and can now feel how you guys must be cursing, those of
u who get this frequently. I haven't had a disco for months, last nite I got
bashed on lap1 of the restart of REAR MC, today, just minutes ago, SRM said
goodbye to me on transition. I immediately tried 6 different ISP's and
joined different servers on VROC, all with pings of around 100. I can't stay
connected to any, quality goes from perfect to infinite within
seconds........ something wrong with the net this weekend or is it just me?
WinVROC-Chatrooms all give me an error-message asking me to check my
connection, cant get in there either.

Hi Maaki,

I think there were some problems around the net yesterday, I was
suffering lots of warps and disco's yesterday (very rare for me) and I
spoke to several others who were suffering the same thing. Hopefully it
will be better tonight, round one of UKGPL awaits :-)

We had a lot of problems in our TCC races yesterday.  There were many
disconnections, from people who are normally fairly steady.

Do you use a cordless phone?

Cordless phones cause massive line noise even when they are on the hook. If
you do use a cordless phone... unplug it when you race (I assume it's
useless when you are online anyways... so I doubt it'll affect you...).

Don't know if this is your problem... but it doesn't hurt to just unplug it
from the wall anyways.

Cheers,

Shumi

I've had similar probs this afternoon, and I'm connected
through our LAN, so ISPs and cordless phones don't seem to
be the problem.

This effect will grow, Markus, as we enter the "Solar Max" this year.  This
occurs every eleven years (approx) and is caused by *** aactivity on/in
the Sun producing massive discharges of solar radiation (in 1987 it caused
massive blackouts in eastern Canada).

Believe me...it will get worse.

I thought the major part of the Internet traffic was routed through cables,
and not by sattelites. I don't think cables are that much affected by solar
activity as the sattelites are. But perhaps I'm wrong here, please correct
me.

I suspect this bad weekend is more to do with pirated copies of Win2000
moving around than solar flares :-)

Similar things seem to happen when a new, eagerly awaited demo for
something like Quake turns up. Bandwidth vanishes for a few days.

No mate...no kidding.  We can all expect huge increases in interference with
all forms of communications this year....particularly any comms that are
relayed via satellite.

A lot of  international traffic is handled by satellite, Martin but yes, a
host of it still travels via cable as well.
But even "cable" transmission is susceptible to the high levels of solar
radiation produced during a Solar Max.

(Grin) If you're relaying your internet stuff by satellite it's no
wonder you're getting poor ping times Bruce.  Seriously tho, do they
really do that in Oz?

The idea that solar flares will affect underground fiber optic bundles
is more than somewhat laughable.  I don't know enough about fiber optics
to comment.

In a worst case scenario they say the strong magnetic rays can pass
though the atmopshere and instantly shut down anything electronic like a
nulcear storm would. A similar Magnetic storm happened about 10 years
ago and it caused eastern Canada to lose power for a while. I just hope
they don't hype it as much as they did with Y2K. But we should get to
see some nice Northern Lights. :)

Ooops - that last sentence was meant to say "I don't know enough about
satellite transmission to comment" - fiber optic comms (the vast
bulk of the internet) will not be affected by magnetic storms.

(By coincidence I was in a group researching magnetic storms 6 years
ago and now am in a group researching internet comms).

The entire internet backbone is fiber optic - most intersite
connections are fiber optic.  Satellite is really a last resort when you
can't get a cable down - because it leads to unacceptably high ping
times.

(1) Satellite transmission IS used, yes, but not universely and not for all
forms of telephonic transmission.
(2) All electro-magnetic transmissions are affected by solar radiation.
Whether the transfer of data via fibre-optics falls into this category I
don't know.
