Is there a way to change mt car number?  No matter what I do, I always
get #4.  For the record, I'm trying to get car #1...

I tried the following things:

1) Setting the car_number line in my player's driver.ini file

2) Since Brabham drives car #1, I moved him to be the 6th AI car in the
carai.ini file, and started a race (with the previous change still in
effect).

3) Started a multiplayer race as the host with nobody else joining (with
the previous two changes still in effect).

What can I do to change my car number???

That's not the right way to do it.  Your car number is unique on the grid
(in a race), and that's the way it should stay.  But for training and for
multiplayer, we should be able to select our cars.

In the demo, there is a setting for preferred_car_number (or
something) in one of the .ini files. I have the demo on the other
machine, so I can't check right now. Is this still present in the
final version? If so, it might be worth the trouble trying to change
it and see what happens.

It's still there, but it doesn't seem to have any bearing whatsoever in
the sim.  Eric Busch explained that you cannot pic a car number that is
used by an AI car - apparently this holds true for training, and
multiplayer races as well.

While it makes sense to a point, we should still be able to override what
the sim wants to do, especially for a "no AI cars" race, or in training.
This will just make it tougher to get leagues going because you have to
caution people that a given set of car numbers are in use by the AI and
therefore cannot be used.  Piss poor planning/design if you ask me...
