At 12;15pm Indianapolis time,Pole Sitter SCOTT BRAYTON lost his life
in a bizarre accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
As Scott was entering turn two,the right rear tire went down, causing
the car to spin and impact backwards into the wall below the suites.
Scott was taken to Methodis Hospital, where Dr. Terry Trammell
pronounced him dead at 12:50 pm.

Firestone officials said that there was tire problems, and they are
beginning an official investigation.

tonight, the numbers of all qualifiers for the indy 500 have been
removed except for #32 which remains in the pole position.
the tower will remain lit overnight.

This is a great shame.  It's such a tragedy when a person loses thier
life whether in motor sports or otherwise.  But for it to happen in
practice is a double tragedy in my opinion.  I've heard (rpm2night) that he
was off the pace and only running 208 (previous lap or turn 1 entry/exit?)
when he spun into the wall.
From what I heard the "tire as cause" had not been confirmed only that
the tire was shredded when retrieved and that and official investigation
was beginning.

Will they leave the pole empty on race day for Pace/Yellow laps?  I think
that would be a good tribute to him.

If they do 3 parade laps, I would hope that the first 2 would be done with the
pole position empty, out of respect - then the 2nd and 3rd cars slide over for
the start...
