Voodoo 3 as 2D card

by Doug Gordo » Sat, 29 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I've been playing on my new system that has a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. So far
I've noticed a couple of video glitches in regular 2D type apps that
may or may not be due to the video card or drivers. Does anyone have
any general comments on 2D performance (quality, not speed) of these
cards? I'm coming from a PC with a Matrox Millenium card that was rock
solid in this respect.

I've never had any problems with it and I use a lot off different apps. I
would recommend it to everyone.

I worked on 4 systems most all this week with V3-2000/3000's and never saw a
hiccup.  I'd say you have something else wrong.  The install was smooth as
glass also.  What kind of problems are you talking about.

What MB/CPU/Monitor?

It has been stated that the 2d on the Voodoo3 is on par with anything
out there including Matrox. I have to agree!

Just installed a V3 card here, and it looks great, no problems, might be
something else is causing your probs?

Have you looked at the control panel to see if there are any conflicts?
Have you got the latest drivers for your V3 card & monitor?

An added bonus of getting the new V3 card, means I can put the old 12Mb
V2 card in my *other* pc, which only had a 4Mb 3dfx card, so that has
slightly better graphics too now as well (even better for my two PC LAN
sessions!!!) Although I think the K6 200 (clocked at 225 is prob the
bottleneck for the V2 card now?)

The GPL fps on my *other* pc, using the old V2 card have gone up from
around 20 - 24 fps (with a lot of eye candy turned off) to around 30 -
34, occasionally hitting 36 if I'm on my own on the track (still low
20's during starts though!) So GPL is *much* better on my *OLD* pc too!
Whooaawhaaawww!!!!

The Voodoo Banshee had some issues in 2D, but I haven't experienced any
problems at all with my V3 2000 AGP (OEM).  Using DirectX 6.1a and the
drivers supplied with the card.  I considered upgrading the drivers at one
point and then remembered the old maxim: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I too recently upgraded from a Matrox Millenium to a V3 and have seen some
2d problems in Windows.  These started after I upgraded to the latest
drivers and DX7 and consisted of icons turning solid black.  I kept DX7 and
went back to the old 3Dfx drivers that came with the card (I don't remember
the versions).  Cleared everything up.

Hope this helps.
