I just replaced my geforce2 mx with the above card and was expecting
to get a decent fps increase in nr2002.  I actually LOST 15-20fps.  Is
there anything I'm doing wrong?  I am using the latest ATI drivers.

other specs:
duron 1ghz
384mb ram
sblive 5.1
win98

You might check if you have 'smoothvision' or fsaa on.

I checked that and it is turned off.  I even flashed the bios to 8500
retail to get the 275/275 cpu/ram speed and the fps stayed exactly the
same.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

I have an Ati Radeon 8500, and it does run a lot faster with Opengl than
with Directx with Nascar 2002. Another trick that helps is to set the
desktop to 16 bit color. I don't know why it helps, but it does. Probably
frees up some memory or something.

Yep, I've tried all that.  This is getting pretty frustrating.  I'm
going to exchange the card for something else if I don't find the
problem in the next day or so.
