1000MHz chip and Voodoo2 with GPL ?

Agree with this assessment. ....And you are right that the V2's are very
inexpensive (if you can still find them), so it might be worth your while to
get 2 V2's and run them in SLI mode.  (Make sure that you have enough open PCI
slots, first.

anyone think there is more chance of getting 1024 with a faster
processor and a 12Mb (rather than 8) V2 card ?  How processor
dependent is the card's performance. GPL i always thought was mainly
CPU intensive

amend my previous post - with one V2 1024 is clearly asking too much.
2 V2s i think would overheat my already crowded case !

No.  A single Voodoo2's maximum resolution in Glide is 800x600 no matter how
fast your cpu is.
It is a limitation of the Voodoo2 not the cpu speed.
You cannot run 1024x768 in Glide with a single Voodoo2,  it requires 2
Voodoo2 cards.

Not very...

Yes it is very cpu intensive

I had thought so myself but that's not the case.  I remember it well, having
been corrected on this forum by a member of the GPL design team.

What about an Obsidian X24, they can be had used for a fair amount and
it only uses one PCI slot, it is an SLI adapter with several 3dfx
GPUs. There is a guy named Jack on
misc.forsale.computers.pc-specific.cards.video
that is trying to sell one for about $75 US (now you could amost get a
V5 for that . . .)

I had a P2 350 and a V2 for a while. I enjoyed pretty high framerates at
800x600 most of the time (not at Monaco with lots of AI cars), but I wanted
to be able to max out the detail, improve the resolution and use funky
features like the 3D wheels. I bought a P3 600, expecting  some improvement,
but in fact it made virtually no difference in GPL. The more detail and
stuff happening on screen, the less difference it made. In contrast,
switching to D3D on a GeForce 256 DDR was like a revelation.

In conclusion, I'd say it was not worth your while getting a V2 for your
1Ghz PC. You'd be better off sorting out whatever driver problems are
causing the flag colour malfunctions. Everything works fine on my system,
although the texture filtering doesn't look as good in D3D as in Glide IMHO.

Alex.

BTW - one of my friend's computers was significantly faster at running GPL

I can runGPL at 1024 using my single Voodoo 2?  Admittedly the frame rates
are a bit too poor.

1000MHz chip and Voodoo2 with GPL ?

Ian,
With GPL the biggest difference the CPU makes is in the framerate with
a large number of cars in a race. I run a 1Ghz Athlon with a V3 3000 and get

drops to 29 at the start when running at 1280x1024 with all detail on. I

V2s getting 25 fps at the start of races and 36 elsewhere with the detail
slider nearly halfway and specular lighting etc. turned off at 1024. One big
advantage of Glide is the ability to have full detail in the mirrors. I
tried a GF2MX with my Athlon and had to go back to "cars and track (?)" in
the mirrors to get acceptable framerates. If GPL is your number one sim,
then maybe you should consider dicing the MX in favour of (dare I say it?) a
V5 (cheaper than a "proper" GF2 GTS and will certainly give better results
in GPL and acceptable results in most other sims)
Just my 2 pacific peso's worth.
                                              Phillip...
