Just received my beta version of the patch for CPR. I'm going to try it now
and I'll let you know my first impressions a little later today.

I can't give a full, detailed review of the CPR patch yet as I've only
spent a little time with it so far. Two features I'll give a brief comment
on are the AI and null zone slider feature. I can say that there is a
remarkable difference in the AI. I drove Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio, and
Fontana. I was never rear ended, never rammed,  the starts are much
cleaner, and what is really great is you actually race along side the other
cars instead of just dodging them as you pass by. What I mean is that
during the race, you have cars around you constantly, matching your speed
and ability, which makes the game much more enjoyable. You no longer feel
you are hot lapping with obstacles in your way that need to be passed.
There are no slow cars that cause accidents either. The AI can be adjusted
further, as in the original, by changing the files directly. To be honest,
I was kind of stunned at the improvement in the AI. The null zone slider
also makes a big improvement in the steering and should make it possible
for almost everyone to find a steering set up they like. Personally, I
liked the steering in the original and had no real complaints at all, but I
can see what the null zone will do for some drivers. It will definitely
help those who complain about twitchy steering, who may be new to the game,
or those who just prefer a less responsive feel to the steering. I noticed
that the last turn at Laguna Seca was easier to navigate for me than ever
before. These are just a few comments I thought some of you might be
interested to hear since the steering and the AI were the most common
complaints.

Did the Gamma fixes make it easier to see where the hell your going?  I have
a hard time seeing the track...no contrast between the cars and the track
colors.

Your comments are appreciated... Thanks for taking the time to post.
It is really encouraging to read that the improvements have actually
been made. Let's hope this isn't one of those deals that really looks
good at first, but after awhile.............well, you know...

It sounds promising! If the patch makes it out ot the public before
Christmas, and the improvements are as good as they appear to
be, it will truly be a remarkable effort from Microsoft and TRI. So
far, I'm impressed with the support... let's hope it lasts for a long
long time!

Thanks again,
- Mike.

What about the AI in the circle tracks? That was the MAIN problem.

You don't mention the frame rate! That was my biggest problem with the
demo.
How is it?

(I really want a CART sim, so I'm still hoping...)

Well, he said he didn't get a chance to test all the tracks, but he did
test Fontana, so it looks encouraging...

Dave,

When you get a chance, please shed some light on some of the other
items or "issues" listed here in r.a.s.  Your input and desire to let
us in on the patch is truly appreciated.

P.S.  How 'bout those flags, like the yellow ones?

Richard, I assume you have a Rendition card (since the darkness doesn't
seem to be present on 3Dfx cards).  I found last night that the latest
reference driver for the Rendition card, the 2.1 beta at Rendition's Web
site, has a gamma adjustment.  This helped a lot on my machine.

With my Pentium 200 MMX, 32 MB RAM, Diamond Viper 330 with the latest
drivers, no sky texture, no grandstands, and I am all alone on a track I
consistently get 40 fps without the dash (HUD only) and 32-34 fps with the
dash.  In a crowd, I get 25+.  I finally left the dash on and quit looking
at the frame numbers after a while as I am comfortable with my framerate.

I don't want to mislead you, however.  I don't think the Rendition and 3DFX
cards are seeing as much improvement, but they are seeing an improvement.
I'm not really sure on their numbers.

As always the AI is being tweaked and tweaked.  I am not a blazing fast
driver so the AI is giving me a run for my money which boils down to fun.
For the fast drivers out there, the AI is not going to be as much of a
challenge, BUT it doesn't crash into you.  I think they need to figure out
how to slow down the human cars for the really fast drivers out there.  I'm
still trying to speed myself up.
