Graphics are darker in HIGHEST image quality (more complex shading system).

Try GOOD or BETTER quality if you prefer "brighter" track.

Upcoming patch has GAMMA controls for track and car brightness.

The track seems like it's a mud color. I've got a 200 AMD and a ATI

If you have an Orchid 3-d 3dfx card you can adjust the gamma in the
properties section of the 3dfx card settings
Go:
settings
control panel
display
righteous 3-d

adjusting the gamma to about 1.4 worked real well for my card-monitor
combination. Your mileage will obviously vary

On my system, the tracks look kind of brown only in the unaccelerated mode.
When I use my 3dfx card, the tracks are a nice gray/black color.  Sounds
like the problem lies with your graphics card.
