I did this when GPL came out, now I am faced with the same
circumstances with N4.  The CD-ROM, it seems, must be the culprit, as
several people are mentioning that they are having trouble with this
area.  I am having trouble with this for sure.  I just got a new
computer this past Christmas, and now I am faced with spending MORE
money to upgrade to make some spinning piece of plastic run better?

                                   NOPE!

Been there  -- done that a few years ago , and it was an exercise in
frustration in visiting Allison Hine's web site and this person's web
site and that person's web site, and on and on and on and on and on.

And this went on for what seemed for an eternity.  I finally
uninstalled the darned sim and it remains in the box to this day in
pristine condition.

I see the makings of the same thing now, I don't think I am going to
fall into the same trap of falling into the "SIMULATION MONEY PIT".

After a while, after you find that the online racing has a bunch of
people with "room temperature" IQ's who revel in the fact that they
enjoy running into the competitors rather than honestly competing, I
feel it isn't worth it any more.

I remember when I bought Nascar 1, I could not run all the details, all
the cars drawn ahead on my 486 33mHz, 1 meg video card, 4 meg of RAM,
even though Indycar Racing had run smoothly. So I settle for 12 cars
ahead, no decals. I was getting decent framerates, no much more. Back
then, processor speeds were doubling every month!

Then I bought a P 166mHz, the same deal happened with other sims I
bought (can't remember if it was GPL). Over the years, I gradually
upgraded my systems; my PII 400 was running GPL a little faster, but not
with all the details. N3 was ok on it. Then I got my P3 866; GPL really
flew on it, was able to put high res. Now N4 comes out... of course, I
can't run every thing maxed out. A year or two down the road, when I
upgrade my system again, I will be able to, though. Of course, there's
probably going to be another game that's going to require a lot.

What's the catch? It's a hobby I'm willing to put money on and it's the
reality of PC biz. If you're not willing to do that, I recommand you
stick to consoles or get a Mac ;)

Considering GPL came out in 1998 and it's now 2001.  I would say it was time
to upgrade regardless of N4's requirments.

We get the point, thank you. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the
kitchen, I say.

I find most online racers quite intelligable, likable people. However, I do
see your point somewhat. I think everyone of us has been made to look a fool
by the internet conditions he/she happens to be racing under at one time or
another.

There's at least one person in this newsgroup who thinks you have an
excellent point. BTW, unlike most who have criticized you in this thread, I
DID notice you mentioned you just bought a new PC.

DON'T buy a new CD-rom for this one game. Ridiculous.

I would only upgrade to a new CDrom if you are a huge nascar racing sim
fan...otherwise, stick with GPL and have some fun...don't let it get to you.
