You're better off just copying the 2.53 dll to GPL folder.  That way
other programs that don't have a problem with the 2.54 version can
benefit from it.

Sorry I cannot be of help with that problem, but if it ain't broke,
why fix it? It worked fine, so obviously there was no need to install
the "latest Voodoo2 DX6 reference drivers", whatever that is. Looks
like You shot your system "upgrading"... Ask Sierra for a linux port
of GPL, which whould make much cleaner package management possible.
