OT.....possible to transfer Windows to other HD ??

by Verne » Mon, 13 Jan 2003 15:46:54

Hello group. This is off-topic but seeing how EVERYONE here is a PC Guru,
figured I'd ask here. I was given a 20gig HD in trade for my 8.4gig HD. I
want to know if I install this HD can I just "transfer" my whole "c:\" drive
over including all my Windows files?? Would save ANOTHER formatting and
driver reinstalling AGAIN !!!!! I would really prefer a very user friendly
and easy way to do this.      (WIN98 BTW)

TIA.....Verne.

XCopy is actually a possibility too. And there are freware tools to "ghost"
a drive.

Your best bet is going to be to hook up the new drive as a slave and use
software like Norton Ghost or DriveCopy to image your old drive to the
new drive. Then hook the new drive up as master and you are right back
where you started, except you are running on the new drive...

Xcopy won't leave the new disk bootable if the original was, will it?

AFAIR in Win98 the sys C: command still works, so that could be taken care
of.

Well...........I pondered th XP upgrade.........but my WIN98 is working just
fine for now and to reload drivers and EVERYTHING that I just went though to
get back onto the HD........not worth the money or time for me.........YET
!!!!     I was actually giving XP a look-see over the weekend as a matter of
fact, seems to appear rather "cartoonie" to me..........can all the pastel
colours be changed ??  Just that whole artists palette colouring seemed to
be too much for me. ORRRRRRR, maybe I am a Microsoft PURIST ?!?!?!

No problem Verne.  You can always run it in Classic mode.  Will look
like your 9x desktop.

Yes!  There is a free utility to do just this:  XXCOPY.
http://www.xxcopy.com   I have used it myself to move a Win98 installation
to a new drive.  The "Technical Bulletin" page gives exact instructions for
doing it (cloning).

No problem, just make sure that you follow these steps in order:

a) with your old HD still in place, make a boot diskette, you'll need it. Then
turn off the PC.

b) disconnect your old HD, and connect the new one in place. Turn on the PC and
make sure the BIOS recognizes it.

c) boot from the floppy (make sure the BIOS will allow you to boot from floppy)
and partition the new HD (using FDISK), don't forget to set the partition active
in the end. Turn off the PC.

d) reconnect your old HD and also connect the new one (as primary slave or
secondary master, whatever suits you, I personally set HDs as primary and
secondary masters, and CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM as slaves). Turn on the PC and make
sure the BIOS properly recognizes both.

e) boot Windows from your old HD, then format the new HD (be careful, you don't
want to accidentally format your old HD! your new HD is possibly D: if you
only had a single partition in the old HD, that is, C:)

f) now open the Windows Explorer, go to the C:\ folder, make sure it isn't
hiding any file types, and select everything (files and folders) except the
Windows folder, and copy them to your new HD's root folder (possibly D:\ as
previously mentioned)

g) create a folder named 'Windows' inside the root folder of your new HD
(as I said, possibly it is D:\). Now go into the C:\Windows\ folder and
select everything except the Win386.swp file, and copy them to the Windows
folder within your new HD (possibly, D:\Windows). After it's done, turn off
the PC.

h) disconnect your old HD and connect the new one as primary master. Turn on
the PC, make sure the BIOS properly detects it, and then boot from the floppy.

i) make a "SYS C:" from the floppy to write the boot record of the HD. Then take
the floppy out and restart your PC. If everything went fine, you'll now have a
copy of your original Windows configuration on your new HD. Keep the old one
as an emergency backup.

OT.....possible to transfer Windows to other HD ??

Fester,
is that an installation option or to be adjusted on the completed system?
I had a look at XP and 2 things were annoying me:
1. The looks and handling (could be adjusted according to you)
2. Things are not in the right place. Explanation: I'm used to synchronize all
data between my notebook and home-PC, incl. Outlook express mail, addressbook,
all data,... I cannot find e.g. the mail files (*.dbx) in XP, although it's
running OE6

Any idea?

TIA
Jens

Windows Classic is the theme style, giving the task bar etc. the 9x look
& feel.  The Start menu properties can be adjusted as well, losing the
most-often used programs section.  Right click on the Start button &
choose properties.  Start menu tab, Classic Start menu.

I know nothing about either IE or OE, don't use them.  Sorry.
