Not that I think it's a "must have", but there is still a significant
psychological difference between an offline leage and online, even for a
rally. Say it's down to the wire between Bob Roll and me for the
championship. In an offline league, I run my stage as quickly as I can, but
I have no idea of how I've done until all the results are in and tabulated.
In online, I wait for my slot. Bob has gone one minute ahead of me, and I
know I have to make up 27 seconds to bag the rally. At each split, I get
real-time info about where he is, and this makes a significant difference in
how I drive the stage. It can either give me the extra edge to pull out a
hero run, or put me over the edge and out of the race. Either way, I think
it adds something tangible to the rally experience.
Now, would I hook up online and wait through 23 starters at one minute
intervals to put in my stage? Personally, probably not.
