Xpand Rally demo - better than expected

Well, I've played this one for an hour, and its still on my hard drive!

This is a good week for trying out rally games.

As Fredrickson said, its worth a good look. If you set it up for simulator
mode, and ensure that the server is also set up for simulator mode, its not
bad at all. At least the car will exhibit understeer into the corners, and
requires a modicum of throttle control to get neatly through the corners
without spinning. Put it this way, for the first time in a long time, I
actually feel a sense of satisfaction when I set up a series of bends
properly.

Having said that, I agree that its no RBR, even though I haven't had the
oppurtinity to try the latter yet. The biggest negative is that the car
doesn't have any sense of the bumps and camber of the road. You can
completely ignore the surface of the road, and just drive by the angles of
the next corner. After the few minutes it took to master this, the game
started to get a bit boring.

Anyway, I'm happy to keep this on my system until RBR comes along. Who
knows, I might even try a few online games.

Cheers,
Tim

"Having said that, I agree that its no RBR, even though I haven't had the

This is an odd statement.  You haven't tried RBR but then you know it's
better than Xpand Rally?

I haven't tried either, though I have the demo of Xpand; I just haven't
installed yet.

RBR is becoming the GPL of Rally racing.  Nothing tops it, and if you try
any other Rally game that's disrespectful and foolish.  Not only that, but
if you say that RBR is not the best Rally simulation ever, you're talking
foolishly and know nothing of what you say.

I've grown accustomed to such bias.  That type of elitism doesn't bother me
as much as it might have in the past.

Have a good day all,

Alanb

I just deleted RBR and tried Xpand. Very nice feel. I too might hang onto
this one a bit. Looks like it will have a lot of great features. AVI saves
ect.... I did look at trying an internet game but saw no one playing? A few
servers without names and empty.

So... what's wrong with that?

Well, I was pretty much goshing you guys.  I know that's how all you guys
feel, but that's fine.  If that's how you feel, you have the right to feel
that way.  It's not like I'm going to avoid RBR when and if it ever gets to
North America.  I like a good Rally sim as much as anyone else; but then I
also like a Rally game like Rallisport 2 (XBox), which is arcade.

I never actually liked CMR.  It never kept my interest for that long.

Take Care,

Alanb

Fair comment. I was going on reputation, and results of the various PS2
reviews. I didn't say it was "better" than RBR, I said "it was no RBR". The
subtle difference here is that "better" is a more subjective term. Many
gamers won't like RBR, and in this case, Xpand Rally will be a "better" game
for them, especially with its online play feature.

However, as an ex rally driver looking for a simulator, I personally place
realism above anything else in determining what is "better" for me.

Tim

I erred in my previous post I was comparing Colin McCrea 5 to Xpand not RBR.

Indeed, and I do too.  But the occasional arcade Rally (a la Rallisport) is
fun nevertheless.

For anyone that may have tired of Xpand Rally, try giving it a go at
midnight (speaking of the in-game time, of course).  Driving in near pitch
black lighting with nothing but the headlights to show the way is pretty
interesting.  It'd be nice if GTR could have that sort of lighting for night
racing.
