Ok, now I realise just why I was so slow in GPL... I'm rubbish! It's taken
me about 20 attempts before I got a success on this lesson.

For those as yet un-RBRed amongst us, basically it's a wide (coned) track
in an S-shape. You hit ~60kph in 2nd gear, flick out the back end for a
powersliding 180, then the same again soon after, leaving you travelling
in the direction you were originally headed. No handbrake allowed (damn!)

Looks absolutely superb in the demo playback. Very professional. But my
attempts look like the ***agers who wreck their cars in the carpark
behind where I live. Embarrassing! I only just manage to scrape in under
the 15 second time limit (a second or two slower than the demo), and
there's a lot of hit & miss about my attempts.

Ok, I could move on to the next test now I've passed, but I really feel I
need to get this right and feel in control... because god only knows how
I'll manage otherwise trying to use this technique to aid my course times!

The interesting thing about this experience is that it reminds me of the
learning curve in GPL. You can drive the courses quite fast without too
much effort. But to drive them *properly* is a whole different ball game,
and there's a lot to be learned.

As someone else pointed out in a recent post, it gives you renewed respect
for those complete nutters who do this for real with trees within spitting
distance either side of the track.

Andrew McP... off to play a little gentle Doom3 to wind down ;-)

Hmm, I think I did it on my first or second try. I had a real easy time with
the rally school, except for the last one

Hey man,
This was the hardest test for me as well. I got silver in it right away, but
when I went back to change the 3 silvers to gold, this was the hardest one!!

When you do change them all to gold, you unlock the 2000 impreza!

To get gold, you have to beat 14s, and I got 13.9x I think after about 20
attempts. My thing was to drive in at a bit higher than 60 if you can get
away wtih it (it'll be mad if you go to fast) swing wide, let off the gas,
swing into the corner and gas it so the nose almost hits the apex cone...
accellerate out and head wide for the next corner, do the same...

I think the key to beating that 14s is to get the powerslide positioned just
right so that you aren't going wide and you're practically hitting the cones
on the apex..

I found it tough too. Managed to get the gold award after a number of
determined attempts but it sure didn't look as good as the demo!

BTW I love the replays - the car moves around in a realistic manner,
fantastic!

My only gripe is the lack of split axis support for my Formula Pro. I end up
with an inverted brake :( If ever a game needs split axis it is this one,
indeed to get through the school I had to hit a key to brake & accelerate at
the same time as required.

Cheers
Tony

You know, aside from the fact that the front wheels never turn in the
corners..

The only tip I can give is to try to keep the wheel as straight as possible,
with a slight lean toward oversteer if necessary. Try to balance the car
through the turns with the gas and brake (lotsa LFB'ing) instead of working
the wheel...and of course...take a tighter line on the first curve to haul
ass out of the second.

Thanks,

While the Rally school is not excruciatingly difficult, I at least have a
lot to learn about effective powersliding and turning.  Rally game racing
has always been one of my favorites, along with maybe GT racing (a la SCGT
and GTR) and F1.

I never cared much for oval racing, especially NASCAR.  Indy racing is
moderately fun.

Forza (to return to the XBox motif) is going to be a riot.  :)

It picked up the split axis on my Red leather MOMO right off the bat, I've
heard this gripe a few times though . . . .  one guy even had the same wheel
as mine, quite strange.

Thanks. I think my biggest problem is speed. I think when it says 60 it
*means* 60... not 80 or 90 :-)

I realized I didnt get the gold so I tried a few more times and got it. I
never had to left foot brake, just let off the gas and swing the car around
then give it a little throttle so the wheels can bite and get you going
forward without losing too much time sliding

I tend to hide them in the foliage so I don't see them :)

I've heard a few people say this - must be a bug in the PC version since
they definitely turn in the PS2/Xbox versions.  If so, then I'm sure it will
be one of the first things they fix if a patch comes out.

I too had a lot of trouble getting this to 'perfect'.

My problem was I was letting go of the throttle way to much - once I
realised I had to use lots of throttle to get the car in the power
slide it was relatively easy :-)
