At this particular moment, it is impossible to discuss any criticisms of GPL
here at r.a.s. The emotional cheerleading will drown you out.

This has happened before with sims and r.a.s., and it will happen again.
Same exact situation, different sim.

I think it's an excellent sim but it does have faults. Pointless though in
bringing them up with these guys. You could have a logical discussion with
some of them, and maybe get a beter understanding of the causes, but it
would get drowned out by the rah, rah, stuff. Then statements get twisted,
insults fly, and you end up with nothing but nonsense. What's funny is that
the Papyrus folks would probably be far more open to any criticisms, and
infinitely less defensive if you were able to talk with them. I don't know
that they really learn much form someone who just tells them everything is
great.

Developers don't come to r.a.s. and discuss their sims, except to maybe give
technical help. I wonder why?  :-)  If the knowledge here is so
incredible.......

What you'll get here is the "cult" of GPL.

"My sim is better than any other, therefore I am better than any other."

Odd because no one here is on the Papyrus payroll. Guys try to attach
themselves to a sim by supporting it strongly, then maybe they feel like
they helped develop it. The same situation happens with sports teams and
their fans.

It's a shame because this newsgroup is supposed to be about sims in general,
not a competition. Guys get pissed at me just because I happen to appreciate
the efforts of more than one company. Too bad.

Lawrence and Zonker described the situation well last week.

No.  People get pissed at you because you hype something
like CARTPR, and blow off real complaints that people
have about it (controller problems come to mind as a
recent example).  Then you nitpick the hell out of
something like GPL.  People have endlessly tried to
engage you in conversation, only to be dismissed as
cultists.

Pat,

Again someone bringing up CPR. I haven't discussed CPR here for a long,
long, time, except to reference it's online play recently. I doubt I'll play
any one sim for a year or more anymore. I offered help to anyone who needed
it with controller problems, and spent a number of hours of my time giving
that help (hardly call that "blowing people off") in private e-mails to
people. I gave them setups and controller settings which solved their
problems 90% of the time.

Where have I "nitpicked the hell" out of GPL. I said it's "excellent", an
"A", and "one of my two current favorite sims". IMO it has some faults as
well.

As if no one here is guilty of nitpicking, let alone all out attacks, on
sims.

It's easy to see where this thread is headed.

Will I be "allowed" to like PSCR when it's released? Will I be allowed to
recommend it to people, and state that it may do some, or many things, in an
excellent fashion? Can I criticise it too, or should I just go with the
crowd? You guys tell me. I don't want to upset you anymore.

Doug, why do you need private emails?  Just reply in this NG for all to see.

One thing that's been bugging me:  what's with the dashes?  What emotion are
you trying to convey?

Hi all,
Well its been almost umm 6 or 7 months since I last read this NG.
Pretty amazing that your still pretty much having the same discussions :-)
Hi Pat,
Im not sure I recall you from back then but actually Dave is a
nice guy.
He helped me with set-ups for CPR back when I first got it and couldn't
control it at all. After that I really enjoyed and supported CPR as many
will remember. Hehe I think at some point some even thought I was some kind
of MS spy or something because I had the audacity to like it. See Dave like
myself never said CPR was "THE" sim we just liked it. For its time it had a
unbelievable sense of speed.
But it was very disliked here due to unfulfilled promises made here by MS.
Anyway its just funny that back then the "THE" sim for this NG was
F1rs man everyone here was singing the F1rs praise hehehe guess what? Dave
was saying hey you know what? this F1rs has the same problems as POD.
Man-O-Man they just about burned him at the stake. Funny also that while
they/we cried and cried for MS to patch CPR, Ubi patched the hell out of
F1rs some helped some didn't. But.....
Dave was saying hey guys this F1rs has ummm like sticky grass or something
:-)
They said he was nitpicking then too. But he wasn't it was true :-) It was
also true that CPR had  problems too but, F1rs wasn't all that and as far
as I know "THE"
sim has not yet been built that will be all things to all people. CPR,
F1rs, GPL etc. etc. etc. all good in some ways all have problems in others.
We all like sims right?
Cool my favorite right now is the demo from *** or is it EA now?
SBK World Superbike Championship!
Man this thing is fun I hope they can fix up the steering a bit but this is
the best bike sim I have tried to date. I wonder if it will be "THE" sim
next week :-)

Aloha,
          Mike

What about the other 10% then?

Your main complaint that I see is that sim-drivers
don't use the same line the AI use.  Fine, it's
obvious that they are different.  But comments
like, "something got lost between the realistic
physics and a realistic driving experience",
when talking about GPL, are ludicrous if you
compare GPL to any other sim out there.  It's
so inconsequential.  You spend lots of time
arguing that small point, yet gloss over 10%
of the people you've personally come in contact
with who can't get CARTPR to work right.  Then
you call people who have major, glaring
problems with CARTPR cultists.

I apologize for getting into personal criticisms
of you.  But you seem to lack perspective of
problems with different sims.

I hope that you and I and everyone else love PSCR
so much that we don't do anything else, including
post here, for a while.

Well, after barely discussing it here at all for months, I guess you got me
started again by bringing it up from out of the blue the other day.

I only have so much time in my life to devote to writing e-mails to people
with problems with their sims. If I couldn't help someone, I referred them
to a web site or someone who could. Usually, the people I couldn't help had
a particular controller which I knew nothing about. A web site had detailed
instructions to fix the problem. Also, some people never bother to tell you
if you solved their problem or not.

Christer Anderson made comments regarding the handling of the cars and
realism about a week ago which I completely agree with. I think his comments
explain why I see what I do when I look at replays. It's that simple. He
didn't rip the sim at all (he likes it a lot if I believe), and neither have
I. Randy Magruder had similiar concerns in his interview with Doug Arnao.

People here at r.a.s. have joked about what GPL with rain would be like but
really consider it for a moment. The real drivers of the past, which you can
see in film, still were able to race fairly controlled in the rain. What
would it be like for us?

Byron made comments about multiplay this past week which I also agree with.
They basically went ignored by certain people here.

You guys view my comments differently because you think I don't like the sim
at all, even though I've said over and over I do. Since day one, I have said
it's great. I think I know why too. Somehow, I'm connected with a particular
software company which is the Evil Empire on r.a.s. Because I beta test? I
guess that company will want me shot now since I've praised Ubi and Papyrus
a lot lately.  I'm about to beta a flight sim (Fly!) for another company
soon. Should I be worried? Silly. Who cares?

I've had criticisms of every sim I've tried. I am probably far more POSITIVE
overall than most here though, and I appreciate what many sim developers
have done, which also seems to draw criticism (probably more than anything
else).  MS, Ubi, and Papyrus, have each done some amazing things in the past
year in their sims. Others have too. It's a no win situation unless I agree
completely with the most vocal, core group. If the consensus opinion was
always correct, then everyone in this world would be happy and rich.

To be honest, I'm not sure why you've come after me so strong. If I've ever
ripped you, then I apologize, but I honestly don't remember doing so. Your
name on this group is very familiar to me, and I've always read your posts
on different topics so apparently I must respect them. I also don't remember
ever sparring with you on anything in the past.
