GPL top speed = 483 MPH?

by Ray Bryde » Tue, 09 Jan 2001 22:09:33

I had an interesting time at Indy last night and managed to clock 483 MPH
going into T1. That was exiting the pits! Actually it was another example of
GPLs crash bug, but a very funny one at that. The accident started at pit
entry and I ended up on the BACKSTRAIGHT! Lol.

I will try to post it to one of the GPL Crash Replay sites.

Cheers

I made some cute experiments with the crash bug last week (I assume this
is the bug that enables you to bounce the car like a basketball when it's
missing a few wheels). I tried to smash my Ferrari into the ceiling of the
Monaco tunnel, but alas, it's not solid, and I just kept flying through it.
I did get some gorgeous aerial shots of the local scenery, though. :) Later
I also managed to get an Eagle to zip endlessly back and forth Curva Grande
at 1100 kph, airborne, but the game crashed before I managed to save the
incident replay. A great time was had by all. Except said Eagle.

Interesting, could you tell a bit more of exactly what to do to manage
such abuse ? The best crash I ever did was a *** one at Masta which
resulted in barrelrolling on the outside grass all the way down to Stavelot.

I've got a replay at Avus where I managed 800+ mph (1200+ kph) for a moment.
A Lotus exceeding Mach 1 is quite something!

I had another when my car bottomed out in Eau Rouge and it hit
a "landmine" and catapaulted me into the forest and slammed back onto
the track right into the path of Bonnier.

Another funny one at Jimmi Bo's Crash Replay site
(http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~jimmibo/gpl/index.htm) is called
Rocketman, where an AI is exiting the pits and takes off like a rocket
(including fire and smoke) to Curve Grande. Highly recommended.

I've hit 1774 MPH...I have a replay laying around here somewhere on a
CD...it was done at RemcoRing...I cover the entire front straight in about 9
seconds...half the time in the air, though.

That one puzzles me. I have bottomed out in Eau Rouge a number of
times, and if I go very far to the right to I just don't hit the
armco, the car explodes. Wouldn't be fun if it happened in a online
league race though...

Hi!

This strange behaviour is due to a little "hole" in that particular part of
Eau Rouge. You know, GPL-tracks are made of a lot of sections like a
slotcar-track, for example. If two sections don't match 100% there are small
gaps between them, which can be hardly visible. Normally, the car would roll
over such a gap without any problems, but at Eau Rouge, where the car
bottoms out, it could happen that the car touches the gap with its body. And
then the physics engine tilts, sending the car into an orbital flight ;).
Avoid the right line at Eau Rouge or avoid the car from bottoming out and
this thing won't happen anymore.

Crash

20200mph, after a little mistake with track creating :-)

The screenshot looks like 20200mph as well - streaking off into the
distance.
