Well you may be interested to know then that at least Nascar Racing 2 does
indeed run faster and smoother under 98 than it did under Win95, at least
for me. :)

Under Win95 I had to use -4bit textures w/dma rendition version, with Win98
I'm using the 8bit textures with no problems at all.

Since Diamond released the latest drivers for the Stealth S220 I've been
using Win98 Beta preview with no problems at all.  Everything has worked at
least as well as with Win95 and many things work better.  It's been very
stable.  You are right that in most cases Win98 is a bit slower but not
enough to really notice IMO.  I don't use the Active Desktop, nor do I know
many that do, this may be your problem with the speed and stability.

Win98 is not an upgrade that I would consider a neccessity for anything
other than being able to do away with all the patches/updates for Win95.  I
also think the price is ridiculous for basically a bug fix update to the OS
but such is life.  I'll be upgrading to the final retail when available but
only because I can free up some HD space deleting all my patches/updates, at
least until the the patches/updates for Win98 begin to arrive. :)

|Fellow Usenetters,
|     I felt compelled to write and tell all you good people about some
|of the problems I experienced with Windows98. First, for the background;
|I did a full custom install over my existing Win95 O/S. In other words,
|an upgrade, just like I assume most people will be doing. In my case the
|CD happens to be the full version, rather than the strictly upgrade
|disc. The disc is the normal production version that will be on sale
|June 25th.

He's talking about installing Win 98 over 95.

>>    Sounds to me like your first mistake was "upgrading" off of 95 istead
of
>>doing a new install on a formated drive.  As a tech at Best Buy i've
>>upgraded hundreds of computers from 3.1 to 95.  And without fail, all the

>>    As for the DOS problems, I havnt run a DOS game since ICR2!

I agree again, MS shoudnt charge US for win98, but man...dont expect win98
to eat less HDD space then win95 did !!!! it eats twice as much !!!!
also no more patches anymore ! u have online upgrade from now on ! this is
one of the best features !

Well if you work 'desktop support' then with your attitude I'm certainly
***y glad I'm not one of your customers!

It would be nioce, however, to be one of your bosses because i'd
definitely give you a kick up the arse for your 'customer relations'.

With Win 95 and Voodoo2 I can run NASCAR2 with everything 'on'.  If i
can do this under Win95 then there is no 'need' for me to so-called
"upgrade" to win98.

HAHA!!  Yes....I guess it does!
One thing about the Mac....love them or hate them, they do have a stable
OS.

I run GPL on Win98 RC0, but I have to delete some files and calibrate the
wheel every time I start it.

I run Win98 final release and have had no probs with GPL or any progs. In
fact, everything in Windows seems to run somewhat faster.
