burnout review

hi all,

i've spent the lask week playing Burnout on the ps2, thought i'd let
you know what i think of it.

[  played with a wheel, a big wide plasma telly, and big stereo! ]

fun!
intense!
different (i havent played many other ps2 driving games)
frame rate is rock-solid fast!
graphics good. (i've been told they are rubbish, but i dont care!)
100% arcade driving model. :-(
but fun!
sound ok.  (occasionally you cant hear your engine - small bug?)
not many config options.

driving flat out around a city, just clipping other cars, sometimes
driving against the flow of traffic, can be very intense.  some parts
are _very_ reminiscient of the pascal peripherique lap on a bike
video.

when cornering, tring to hit the apex and lookingout for and avoiding
other traffic at the same time is something new.  and going thru a red
light and dodging the crossing traffic is something not to be tried in
Real Life(TM).

the traffic is somewhat deterministic.  so, for example, at this
corner on the 2nd lap, at a specific time, a red van will pull out
from the left.  so you can (eventually) spot these patterns, and learn
to swing left or right at certain points, to miss the back of the van
by the width of a very tiny thing indeed.

there's a championship mode, some way of scoring based on insurance
premiums, and other ways of playing it, 2 player splitscreen, but i've
just been working on my lap times.

recently, my overtaking moves in gpl seems to have become much closer.

cheers,
dr martin.
