I need the NASCAR Indy track if possible!

by Kano » Wed, 28 Feb 1996 04:00:00

If anyone could possibly send me the Indianpolis track after being
converted I would greatly appreciate it.  I have NASCAR Racing, but not
IndyCar Racing, and I really don't see buying IndyCar Racing just for the
Indy track.  If this is software piracy, I'm sorry.  I'd still appreciate
it if someone could send it to me though.
Thanks!

Fact #1.  What he is asking for was available for free download a few
days ago.  Has anyone requested that all those people who downloaded
the Nascar version of the indy track erase it from their diskettes and
hard drives?

Fact #2.  What he is asking for (Indy for Nascar) is not commercially
available from any company for any price.
<<<

Reply #1. It was wrong to have posted the converted Indy track, and the
people at the IWCC (Tony Johns?) were gracious enough to recognize this
and pull the posted track, then publicly acknowledge that it was a
mistake.  It would be great if people
*who*don't*own*the*original*Indy*track* would erase the converted track
from their hard drives, or would alternatively buy the original Indy track
from us, but I know that isn't going to happen.

Reply #2. Not true. You can buy the Indianapolis expansion track directly
from us. The converter is freeware.

If someone is successful at creating a Daytona track, will they be
able to distribute it for free on the internet?

Same copyright problems?
  A.  From the Daytona owners?
  B.  From Papyrus, since they started with some existing track,
reverse engineered it, modified some of it, and then made it look like
Daytona?
<<<

Most likely you would run afoul of Sega, since they hold the exclusive
license to the name and likeness of the Daytona track...

If someone were to offer the nascar converted indy track to you, are
they doing something illegal?  Are you doing something illegal if you
accept it?
<<<

Yes, this would be illegal. Even though the track has been converted, most
of what you are receiving is original copyrighted material from Papyrus.
Look at it this way; if I took a book, tore out the last ten pages and
rewrote the ending, do you think I would get away with publishing it?

Yes, they are, and yes, if it came to their (Jeff's or his team's)
attention, you could very well get into BIG trouble.

Can I use the Nascar paintkit and paint a great Jeff Gordon #24 car
and give that to all of my friends.   (Papyrus would complain, now
they cannot sell me a new carset every year since people are sharing
their updated car sets)
<<<

No, we would not complain, that is why we shipped the paint kit in the
first place. On the other hand, when you make a re-creation of a real
NASCAR and start giving it away like mad, you do run a risk of running
afoul of the corporate lawyers. For example, I wouldn't try to put a "Star
Trek" car on line, because Paramount is *notorious* for "vigorously"
defending the trademarks and copyrights on Star Trek.

Gerhard asked me if we were angry with him for creating the converters. I
said that no, I thought it was great, and that it has increased
cross-interest in the games (IndyCar drivers driving NASCAR and NASCAR
drivers driving IndyCar). As long as the converted tracks don't get
posted, I think this will continue to be our attitude.

This is something I've been wanting to know about for a while:
Papyrus' reaction to these excellent utilities. This is a great result
IMO, the sort of thing that increases my respect for a company. And
where there is respect, I have no hesitation in
purchasing/recommending their products.

Cheers,

I for one would find it very amusing to see demand for a 2 year old
game, Indycar 1 (paint kit + Indy track addon?),  picking up because
Indycar 2 had been released!!!! And that's as a result of these track
conversion utilities of course. That just appeals to my sense of
humour!

Tell me it's true someone?!

This stuff is all great but I believe with Indy and Daytona Papyrus has
got their head up their ass oops I mean in the sand.
Indy is the most challenging track I have driven yet and it should be
made public no if ands or BUTTS

I don't know.

#2. I need something that will load smoothly.  I do not have much
recreation time and I am willing to pay for trouble free installation
into my current NASCAR setup, similar to the way that the track pack
went on top of my existing NASCAR installation.  I do not want to have
to download something from "the pits" or anywhere else.  I want to buy
a diskette, load it into both machines, and then see the new track on
my list of tracks.  Will the new Papyrus offering do this?
<<<

No. There is no new NASCAR track. There is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
expansion track for IndyCar Racing, and there is a freeware utility
available on the Internet for converting the track to run with NASCAR. The
conversion does not invalidate the copyright on the data; you must
purchase the track from Papyrus to have a legal copy of the track.

Don't forget to thank Gerhard the lead programmer! :-)

Err...We have. We just won't  release it into the Public Domain until
we can find a weeze to get around the licensing and copyright laws...

I just bought the Indy expansion track directly from Papyrus.  I think
they just got it in.  It cost $24.95.

Right, lets get this put straight once and for all!
There has been a case 'chinese whispers' gping on here and the truth a
little bit lost.

We haven't yet make a Daytona track from scratch. Until we managed to
decode how 3D Studio files have been converted to 3DO files, the
format used for Polygon objects.

We've taken everything else apart, just not these.

The 'Daytona' I talk about is a slight modification of the Talladega
track. The actual track is the same, with slightly better AI,
different colors, wall textures, scenery, etc.

At present, Daytona does exsist on my hard drive with official Daytona
logos and map, etc.

However, after discussions with a few legal bods, I may be able to get
away with it if I change the logos, pictures and name of the track.

Therefore, the public domain release version will probably be called
'Florida Speedway' and have some different logo's.

Once this is out there, I should be O.K to create a patch that will
rename the Florida Circuit, Daytona.

That way, it is the descretion of the user to rename the track
Daytona.

At present I don't have an ETA for the 'Florida 'track,. I've
discovered a bu in the BMP2MIP converter and it means I can't compile
the textures at the moment.

One point I'd like to make though.

The Calendar file in Nascar has Daytona in it.

Have Papyrus made a Daytona track but are unable to release it, or
when the Calender file was made, we're the y anticipating getting the
lecense to use it?
