Did Clark ever loose a race in his life. Based on GPL you would think
this guy was god's gift to racing.

That's what he was, Vamp.

Even in this respect GPL is entirely accurate. If his car held up, Clark
usually won the race. A typical Clark weekend was: start from pole, take the
lead, set fastest lap, win. Unfortunately the Lotus wasn't too reliable, or
he would have been world champion from 1962 - 1967 every season. Except
maybe 1966 when the new 3 litre formula started and he had to put up with a
badly underpowered car. Clark was in those days what Senna and Schumacher
were/are in ours.

Yep, he lost the 67 Monza Grand Prix (along with other races). While
leading at Monza he had a puncture and was lapped while in the pits.
He resumed in 15th place and one lap down. He then drove a magnificent
race to make up a full lap and regain the lead only to loose the race
on the last lap with fuel problems. He coasted across the line in
third. This gives some indication of his driving ability and why he is
considered as one of the great GP drivers.

The only thing that stopped him from winning more races was the
unreliability of the Lotus. Unfortunatly in GPL Clark seem's to have
been given a very reliable Lotus and he rarely seems to break down :-(

Well essentially he was.  Two examples.  First the spin and win at Indy in '65
(to be duplicated in '85 by Sullivan).  Second...the 1966 USGP at Watkins Glen.
He took the BRM H-16 engine to its only win ever in his Lotus 43.  Anybody who
could win with that engine has my vote for something close to a racing god.  In
a more reliable car he would have never lost.

Well just look at the statistics:
Between 62 and 68 he did 58 races
He finished 36 of which 25 were wins...

So he won more than 2/3 of the races he finished, and in many of the
races he finished, but didn't win he had non-terminal mechanical
failures (like at Spa and Monza in 67, he also had mechanical problems
at Watkins Glen, but won anyway :-)

did someone compare Jim Clark to Senna and
Schumacher?....sacrilege!!!!!!!...without a doubt...and that includes
Fangio,Clark was without a doubt thee greatest driver we will see in our
lifetime and perhaps maybe the next.Altho some may get upset for saying
he was beter than Fangio, but given a choice for a driver for my F1
team,Clark would always be my first choice. He was absolutely
incredible. One of the reasons I find myself enjoying GPL so much is that
it re-creates the era in racing where I first became enthralled in the
sport. This game brings back many good memories from my youth and was the
main reason I became a racing fan to begin with.YES,Clark was that good.

Indeed, at the time, he *WAS* Gods gift to racing.

His talent was unsurpassed, his demeanour was gentlemanly and his
relationship with team owner, crew and peers was widely admired.

Pity that such traits are missing from so many of his successors today.

He did, of course loose (sic) races.  He was, after all, driving
machines designed and built by humans and he was only human
himself....as his untimely death proves.

As others have said, Jim Clark was a supreme driver and racer. IMO only
Juan Immanuel Fangio can match him in the hall of greats.
Do you know that Clark only came 2nd once.
See http://www2.eis.net.au/~bramwell/welcome.htm for a tribute to a
colussus.
Cheers,

Sorry <g>. Just trying to tell young Vamp there that Clark was the
pivotal figure of the sport in those days. Certainly not implying his
qualities are at the same level. I too believe Clark was the greatest
ever, but it's meaningless to compare drivers from different eras.

Here's a lovely quote:
"Clark came through at the end of the first lap of the race sp far ahead
that we in the pits were convinced that the rest of the field must have
been wiped out in an accident".

Seen that in a Supersport 600 Worldseries motorcycle race at
Hockenheim in 1997.
The leader, a guest rider and bike magazin journalist, arrived alone
in the Motodrom, looking desperately behind himself for the
competition, and left the stadium before the field arrived.

Wierd thing. It contunued for several laps until he was caught just
before the finish.

The reason was that he had rain tyres, while the others had slicks,
and where caught by rain out in the forest section, while it was dry
in the Stadium section. The racing line dried off later on.
