GPL FPS at some tracks

by Alan Pengell » Tue, 16 Dec 2003 18:24:09

Hi All

I've got a 500mHz Pentium + Geforce 4 (plenty of RAM) which handles most
of the GPL tracks out there. I tend to use 800x600 res. However, I do
seem to get problems with certain tracks. An example is the Sachsenring,
where the last corner (just before the main straight and grandstands
appear) sees a real drop in FPS. On the other hand I don't get any
problems at all with the Isle of Man TT circuit. Are there any tricks or
patches (I've got the beta OpenGL raster patch from Papyrus) to improve
FPS?

Many thanks

Alan

That track is *** fps even on my P4-2.4 GHz, GeForce4 Ti4400
system.  Sounds like you're getting normal performance with such a
slow CPU.  Other really tough-on-fps tracks that I can think of are
Watkins Glen 1948, Laguna67 and St-Jovite.

Hi Alan,

Usually there are some 'Lite'-patches for tracks to find via
racesimcentral forums or gplpp.com. Also, you might want to try Michael
Schoetz's low-res mirror.mip (on racesimcentral) which gave me some 4 to
6 fps.

If you can figure out which object is causing the problem you may be able to
replace the mip with a lower res version, or the entire 3do/mip with another
object.  For example once replaced the trees at mallory park with one of the
people from the crowds (was something like extract man.mip and renamed it to
tree.mip).  Didn't look as nice but ran a lot smoother.

Been a while since I had to do this, maybe one of the track editors could give
you more details on how to do it, and any pitfalls.

Hi Rudy

The low-res mirror mip sounds interesting and I haven't come across it before.
I went to racesimcentral but couldn't find it - is it definitely there?

Many thanks

Thanks for the help chaps. It actually sounds like I'm getting the best out
of my hardware, though that low-res mirror.mip might help a bit. I'll just
have to clench my teeth when I go through that last corner at Sachsenring!

Happy Racing

Yes, of course.  Should find it here:
