Just accidentally spent...er, 3 hours (!) online with LFS S1

It's the first online racing I've done for about two years and despite
the ***age muppets without proper names, the "Team GM is the BEST in
the world!" macros, the rear end shunts, the "oh, do I have to turn
here?" pileups, the racing round the circuit the wrong way, the
discussion about coloured letters in your name and skin modding, it felt
damned good.

You know in GPL when you forget you're driving a sim and you're just
racing? When you feel kerbs beneath your wheels, not textured polygons?
When you want to get out of your car and ram your***down the stupid
b*stard's throat because... Oh, no... not that then, maybe.

But that's what I was feeling again at times. I think I'm beginning to
feel at home in LFS. The forum at racesimcentral makes me feel far too
old and serious for this sim/game, but out there in ***space nobody
can tell how old you are... except when you use words with more than two
syllables, obviously.

I think we need a passworded RAS:LFS server. I don't expect the racing
to be any more consistent than with the ***agers, but at least we'd be
able to argue here afterwards for hours about skin names and who crashed
into who :-)

Mmm... hang on, I'm getting this sense of deja vu. Maybe I'll join
Rascar instead if I can pass the skin-name & car number initiation test
;-)

Same here... I have the same "damn where did those 3-4 hours go??" things
happen to me, as I did when I first got into GPL online.
Yes there are immature drivers and yes there are various problems, but it's
FUN and it's ***ive.

My respect for the fast LFS drivers have skyrocketed lately, I have met a
lot of them and honestly expected to blow them away with my clean GPL
gentleman driving. Big surprise, they also drive like gentlemen (FAST
gentlemen) and they fully lived up to GPL standard, even waiting after a
questionable overtaking attempt. Find the right guys to race with and LFS is
the best online experience you'll find anywhere.
Can't remember the last time I felt so entertained.

I must admit it hurts my simracing ego, when the guy who have been no more
than 2 inches from your bumper in a killer of a 5 lap race, turns out to be
using his mouse as a controller ;) Oh and a RAS server would be great btw.

Mikkel

PS: And as you probably know we are doing what we can to teach the kidz how
to behave at RSC, and it is get better all the time.

Same here. LFS is the first racing game that has had me hooked for a
long time. Last one I remember was GP2 and that's going back a long way
:)

Most of the community I have found to be pretty pleasant. If you are new
to the servers it can be a surprise is people are going mad but that
generally occurs at the end of a race. Racing so far I have found is
pretty well mannered.

Not sure how the other online raving games go but I have been very
impressed with the netcode in LFS, I play on 64K and have experienced
zero lag.

The forums, well not sure how old you are but i'm no spring chicken and
I find them acceptable and a reasonably good community. They have quite
a nice warning system in place which appears to do well in keeping it in
control. A poll done recently in the polls area seemed to have most
people in the Mid 20's with a fair amount in the 30's (my area :) )

Anyway recommended and would love to see more servers springing up -
preferably open (non-passworded)

It certainly seems to cope very well on the couple of servers I tried.
Nudging someone (I swear my brake pedal was there a moment ago!)
generally has the effect you'd expect rather than causing severe
problems every time.

I think from where I'm sitting "***ager" tends to last until about 25
these days :-). I blame it on the parents for not kicking 'em out of the
family nest soon enough, harsh reality's good for encouraging a little
maturity.

Agreed. I must admit I especially like two features of online LFS at the
moment. First, most races I found were 3 or 5 laps. That means a faster
turnover, less waiting, and more chances to get it right next time. Ok,
longer races might encourage better driving and fewer kids, but it's a
tradeoff I can live with. It would be nice to see a server option that
stopped people joining in mid-race though.

And I also like the map showing you where everyone is. Online racing in
GPL could be a very lonely experience, and in LFS it's nice to be able
to wait for another car and then tag along behind it. It's not very
***, but I've only ever raced online to, er... race! Beating the
track and admiring the scenery is what I do offline :-)

Yes, I found some good people to race with as well. I suspect things
will improve a little more once LFS has a damage model... it's too easy
to go slapping the car off the sides of the South City track at the
moment without penalty, and it encourages a lack of respect for the
cars.

Another thing I found a little frustrating was the way many drivers seem
to swap cars all the time looking for a better drive. Seems to me
sticking to one or two helps the learning curve far better, but the
server code makes it easy to limit available cars, so that's a good
sign.

"Most of the community I have found to be pretty pleasant."

Wait until the developers implement 'damage'. Online collisions won't
be nearly so good natured after that.
