there is any differance between the nvidia and the Asus drivers.

In fact, most of the ASUS video functions will NOT work with generic
drivers, you must use the ASUS drivers.
Stick with the latest release ASUS drivers with that card.
Standard Dets will work, but you'll lose a lot of features in the process.

Unless it's changed since my last ASUS card of course.

Ok, UNLESS it has changed, ASUS tunes their drivers to their cards, unlike
many other manufacturers. This has actually gotten them into trouble a few
times, like when they had the "See-Thru" option in their nVidia drivers a
year or so ago. It improved performance, but it allowed people an unfair
advantage in First-Person shooters because they could see other players
behind walls.
Just one example.
The last ASUS deluxe card I had (don't remember the model, it's been a
while), had VIVO functions that WOULD NOT FUNCTION with reference drivers
installed. Ditto for the 3D Glasses and such. The ASUS drivers had
additional support for the special features of the card that were not
present in the reference drivers because they were ASUS specific.
Again, the basics of the card will work. The extra ASUS features may not.
