OT: Geforce 4 drivers

Well I should have known this was going to happen - I just installed a
Geforce 4 Ti 4200, and while the performance and image quality is great,
there are of course "issues".  The card shipped with the 27.50 drivers,
which caused some texture corruption when using FSAA in Dungeon Siege.
I then tried the 29.42's, and now the menu screen in Dungeon Siege will
not appear when FSAA is on.  I realize there is no need to have FSAA on
in Dungeon Siege, but forcing it on is the only way to get it to work in
some racing games.  I would prefer to not have to go back in the control
panel to turn it off every time I want to play DS.  So I have two
questions: first, does anyone know of a GF4 driver set that allows FSAA
to work without issues in Dungeon Siege, and second, does anyone know of
a utility that allows FSAA to be switched on and off easily from an icon
or a bat file or something?  I guess a third possible solution would be,
does anyone know of a way to select FSAA within GPL?  That option
appears in the GPL Options menu, but it is grayed out.  Is there a
core.ini setting or something similar that will force it on?

BTW, I know I will catch some heat for this, but I have to say that
Radeon drivers are right now in much better shape than GeForce drivers.
I just switched from a Radeon, and it was never that hard to figure out
which drivers I needed with that card.  Sorry, but those of you who
think ATI's drivers suck and nVidia's don't are misinformed.

Crap, I totally forgot to mention which OS I'm using.  I'm using Windows
98, in case that affects anyone's answer.

I have a PNY GeForce 4 Ti4400.  The only drivers that are remotely
stable with it are the 27.42s.  Every driver set I've tried after that
causes insane instability in Win98 (from fresh installs).

I dunno if the 27.42 support the 4200, but you might want to give it a
whirl.  I'm not entirely sure why other drivers seem to behave so
badly in Win98, as I've actually removed all of the hardware from my
system except for the cd-rom drive and video card and stuff like
3dmark still crashes within 15 seconds.

I'm using the 29.42 WHQL drivers with the PNY Ti4400 and it's been no
trouble whatsoever.

Oh, I'm using XP, not 98.  Probably has something to do with it.

Haq....

You have something else going on with your system....its not the NV drivers.

If you are running Win98SE (not Win98)......then use the 29.80
WHQL's....released just a week ago or so.  You probably have either
something set wrong on your mobo bias....or you have a mobo with a VIA
chipset in which case it is essential that you upgrade the chipset drivers
for the Northbridge (runs the video-AGP port, among others).  I can just
about guarantee you your problems are not the NV drivers or your video card.

Good luck....

Tom,

Perhaps I didn't give enough information.  FSAA works fine in all other
games, it is only Dungeon Siege that has a problem.  Also I am using
Win98 "Gold", not SE.  I have a CUSL2 motherboard, which uses some
variety of Intel chipset (815?).  I think I will give the 29.8's a try
anyway (can't hurt) but I doubt very much that it's a system problem.

Thanks for your help,
Hal

Haqsau,

Not sure if you saw this or not, but the easy way to turn FSAA on/off is by
using the Nvidia Tweak utility that sits on the right side of the taskbar.
You turn it on in the NVidia properties and then can change FSAA modes with
a couple clicks.

I am using the latest NVidia drivers and Dungeon Siege doesn't work too well
with FSAA.  Actually it works with some settings and not with others.  Try
2X, Quint, 4X, and 4XS.  One of the settings works ok in DS.  By the way,
4XS actually works great in GPL with my GF4 4400.  Still can keep 36fps with
a AMD 1700+.

Other than this, the newest drivers have been rock stable with everything.

<slapping self on forehead>  Thanks Dave, that's exactly what I need.  I
had actually killed that icon without even looking at it, because I was
used to the taskbar icon which came with the Radeon drivers, which was
useless.  The nVidia one is actually quite useful, I'm glad you called
my attention to it.

Well it isn't Dungeon Siege, but when the new Diablo II came out, I had
an ongoing fight with my kid.  He'd borrow the computer at night and turn
off the fsaa....I'd load up a race and it would look all fuzzy.   then it
would be exit....enable fsaa ...reload....  So the same kind of problems
have been around for awhile now.

I'm using 29.42s and Dungeon Siege doesn't seem to have any problems with AA
under WinME or WinXP (dual boot)

I found out it only has a problem with Quincunx, the other levels of
FSAA work fine.  Unfortunately Quincunx is the level I prefer.  Oh well,
I can toggle it on and off quickly with NvTweak.
