GPL: Stumped by <5fps on P200 w/TnT and OpenGL

Hi All.

I'm really puzzled as to why I can't get any sort of decent frame rates
out of the GPL demo (running OpenGL) -- perhaps someone can lend some
insight ...

My machine:    Intel Endeavor Motherboard w/64MB (66MHz) and external
128KL2 cache
IDT 200Mhz WinChip w/"64k internal cache and MMX"
      CL Blaster TnT
      latest Hercules Drivers
      SB16
      Windows '95, with DirectX6.1, etc.
      OpenGL driver selected in GPL

With all features OFF (and I mean _nothing_ on!) and/or minimized, at
640x480 or 800x600, when in training mode (i.e. alone on the track) I
cannot get greater than 5fps, and it's usually 2-3fps.  I've followed all
the tricks in the GPL demo readme.txt file re: core.ini.

The same machine runs QuakeII in OpenGL just fine at 800x600. It also runs
N1 just fine.

I have tried: disabling the external cache, overclocking the TnT, changing
GPL resolutions, playing with core.ini, changing the desktop resolution,
using different drivers (nVidia, CL), turning virtual memory off, etc,.
all to no avail.

I've noticed that if the game is paused (e.g. I hit F3 to go to config,
then returned) the frame rate rises up to a max of around 18fps.  But as
soons as I unpause, it drops down to <5fps.

I recognize that a PII and/or a Rendition card ought to work better, but
I'm just driving alone with all the graphics detail turned off.  It
doesn't make sense to me.

Is there something about these IDT Pentium clones that's killing GPL?

Thanks,

Andrew Kalman

I second that one.  I get 15 FPS on software rendering with a PII 300mhz.  An
IDT 200 just doesnt cut it anymore.  Sorry, but thats the truth.
