GPL:wheel lock hack=easier to drive! I did it!

by William Dahm » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Well after a few hours of trying to hex edit various things I
finally found a way that works (with out jacking up the non linear
sensitivity, this takes the feel out of the turns).  I have hex edited
my steer ratio to 30:1, of course the game max is 20:1.  With this I
leave the sensivity slider at the middle and it feels perfect.
When I did this I could get the car to stay straight at Spa, both
when braking and when accelerating.  Turning the wheel enough to really
give me some feel has helped me learn to get the yaw correct.  Also, I
can turn in smoothly now, the car doesn't jerk into the turns at the
beginning.  My spa lap times have improved more than 10 sec.
If anyone else could steer on the straights and turn in smooth in
ICR2 but find GPL way to twichy may also want to try this.  I have
attached Doug A. Spa setup for the Lotus with the steer ratio edited to
30:1.  People with low quality wheels or joysticks may want even higher
like 35:1.  If other people feel they need this also then respond and I
will write up a guide that I could send to people who have GPL pages.
L8er!

I think that your help would be appreciated by a lot of people. If you can
post a guide to hexediting the steering ratio, please do it.

i agree.  if you could post the hex locations of the values here for
whichever file needs to be edited, i think we'd all be greatly appreciative.

thanks,

Instead of hex-editing the exe, try fixing your problems with setup
changes.

For instance - I drive the eagle.  I have found that by changing
the following settings, the carr is easier to drive fast more
consistently:

1) Steering ratio to 19:1.

2) Soften the rear bar one click.

3) Adding some negative toe-in on the rear wheels.

4) Make camber the same on both sides of the car.

5) To make the car steer faster into a turn, make front
camber more negative than rear camber (makes the car
   looser).

6) To make the car steer slower into a turn, make rear
camber more negative than front camber (makes the car
   tighter).

7) Add a clutch.

8) Change front toe-in to 0.00.

9) Stiffen the springs.

After doing this, the car (for me) doesn't wobble on the straights, and
it's easier to predict what it's going to do in the turns.  I shaved over
4 seconds off my Spa time (now at 3:29) by making these changes.
