GPL bad scratchy sound

by Tim Elhaj » Tue, 27 Aug 2002 17:38:48

I just reinstalled GPL and I am having big problems with the sound.

I am using an SB Live! card. I have never had problems with the sound in GPL
before. Now it sounds very... "scratch" and just bad. It hurts to listen to
it. I have tried moving the in game sounds from 16 down to 3. Nothing seems
to help. Eventually it just "cures" itself and the sound goes back to
normal, but it's really bad and I was wondering if anyone else has had
anything like this and how to solve the problem.

I am using DX 8.1,  XP, latest drivers for everything, and patched GPL.

Thanks!

A lot of us have had the same trouble.
Fortunately, the latest SB Live Drivers fix the trouble.

reduce the hardware sound acceleration one or two clicks...and the last
time this thread was thru here one of the fixes that worked was to turn your
overall sound down in windows and use your speakers volume to regain the
sound level you had before.

Thanks, I got the latest drivers, but that didn't fix it for me.

It's tempting, but I hate to just dump this card when I know it's worked
before. Heh, my computer could use so many new parts right now (cpu, fast
ram, video) I hate to invest in something like a new sound card.

Thanks Dave, I will give the hardware sound acceleration a try. That's a
good idea.

I don't get the other thing, though. If you turn the sound down in Windows,
doesn't it also limit the amount you can turn up the sound with the
speakers?

And I'll mention that simply switching to a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card
didn't solve the problem for me.  It fixed it for some people, but not me.
I ended up using PartitionMagic & creating a dual-boot system for Win98SE &
XP.  This is a problem that's been discussed a lot on the forums at
www.gplea.org  and there's a lot of good advice there, but for me nothing
solved it short of stepping away from XP for GPL.  This probably isn't what
you want to do, but you've happened upon a common problem that is fairly
easily fixed for some people (ie, new drivers) and not easily fixed in other
cases (the new drivers didn't help my system).

Is the file called

SBLiveXPDrvUpdate.exe ?

it is 9.03 Meg
File Date is Wednesday, 17 July 2002, 3:26:01 PM
This seems strange that it didn't fix it

Your powered speakers should have more than enough umph to handle
reducing your windows output.  What you are doing is reducing the chance for
signal noise to be amplified.  So if your bus or your card or some stray
component is dirtying up your sound, the "less" you amplify it inside
windows, the less noticiable it will be even if you turn up the volume on
your speakers to match the old levels.

I can't speak for Tim, but that is the driver file that I used & it didn't
fix my GPL+XP sound problems on my SB Live.  It has worked for some people,
but it is not a cure-all fix.  Just FYI...

That was what I had installed and it didn't work. There is actually another,
newer update out. It is called LiveDrvPack.exe and is 25.3 MB. It did not
work for me either.

Ah, got it. That sounds like a good tip, Dave. I usually just turn it up
full blast in Windows and then modulate it with the speakers. But you are
correct, because I rarely turn the speakers up more than a quarter of the
way, so I've got lots of room to play with it.

Thanks!

I am not going to fuss with a dual boot, but I am going to setup my old P3
550 with Win98SE and see what kind of framerate I can muster. I just this
evening purchased a new Ge4 video card for the XP box, so now I can migrate
my V5 to the 550.

If nothing else, I am sure I can do fast lapping with to my hearts content.
It would be nice if I could use 4x FSAA and race a full field of AI cars
without any stutter.

Heh, I only want a measly 36 FPS! ;)

I had an old XP driver for SB Live! that worked with my copy of Windows XP and GPL. But, I
didn't keep a copy of that driver and every newer driver has not worked for me. None of
the drivers loaded from Windows Update have worked, and none of the recent drivers loaded
from Creative site have worked. Lowering the volume doesn't help, turning off the sound
acceleration helps to some degree - the sound loses the bathtub quality but adds big
clicks and pops.

Good luck in your quest, but I have given up and ordered a new cheapo sound card with a
CMI 8738 6 channel chip. It's not made by Creative.

Keith.
