OT: Buying a new car, opinions on the following?

by Steven Dickso » Fri, 05 May 2000 04:00:00

I'm in the market for a new car and have narrowed my choices down to four,
but am having a hell of a time deciding between them.  I've done lots of
background reading and research but I'm looking for some more feedback.
Opinions please on the following cars, particularly by those who have owned
them.  Stories, good or bad, things to watch out for, etc.

All cars are in good shape, have had them checked over by a reputable
mechanic, no accidents, all stock with no mods.  Test driven them all, liked
them all for different reasons.  All prices in Canadian dollars (roughly
multipy by 2/3 to get a very approximate $US).  At the moment, I'm leaning
towards the Impreza, but nothing concrete.

1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS, 5 speed, fully loaded.  $20K
1998 Acura Integra LS, 5 speed, fully loaded.  $17K
1996 Toyota Celica GTS, 5 speed, fully loaded. $16K
1990 Nissan 300 ZX (non turbo), 5 speed. $16K

FWIW, here in the UK Subaru consistently top the JD Power table. The
Impreza loses points for poor fuel economy, but is pretty much flawless
elsewhere. The dealers have a good reputation too.

I have one of the few 2.5 RS's in my town...constantly getting looks
at it from others.  Clutch engagement is VERY tight and economy isn't
the greatest...but if you have any sort of inclement weather, the AWD
and limited slip rear diff will make you a believer.

Go for the Subaru, although the Acura has got the looks if you live in a
very favourable climate. Don't even consider the Nissan.

I'm a Honda freak but the Intergra looks a little too much like a toy to me.
I'm hoping to find a good Impreza GT-Turbo in the next months but they are
hard to find in Belgium.
If I where you I would certainly go for the Impreza.

I cannot believe that you cannot make a decision on this yourself.
You have stated that you've driven them, have had them checked, have read up
on their good and bad points and yet you _still_ cannot arrive at a
decision!

What is it that you are looking for....someone else to take the blame if you
end up not liking the car?
What on earth do you do when it comes to other decision-making situations
regarding major expense?

Heavens above........you've got all the input....now decide! Even if it's
only on which colour you prefer, make the decision yourself, man!

Whoa . . . bit over-the-top there, Bruce.  What's wrong with asking for
input from a (possibly) knowledgeable crowd?  The fellow asks for
"[s]tories, good or bad, things to watch out for, etc." . . .  Although some
might question the relevancy of the query to this particular newsgroup
community, I'd say one of the good things *about* community, broadly
speaking, is the variety of opinions one might get--some of which may even
be helpful.

Best value would appear to be the Acura.  The 300ZX will kill you with
the cost of parts and repairs when necessary.  Call around to the
various dealers and/or parts houses and ask 'em what a new alternator,
A/C compressor and fuel injector costs.  I was thinking about a Mazda
RX-7 untill I did that... (an we race one, but $1200.00 for a new A/C
compressor?  Forget it!)

If you are looking to make some upgrades in the future, I don't think you
could go wrong with the Subaru.  They are very popular for aftermarket
add-ons.  Add a supercharger and some other smaller modifications you can
get those puppies up past 400HP!  But besides that, with the AWD system,
it's a fantastic car!  Damn near bullet-proof reliability too.  For me,
the look leaves something to be desired, but it's a personal preference.

Mike
P.S.  I bought my car because it was a hell of a lot of fun to drive,
looked pretty sharp, and got a big-ass discount thanks to a family member!

If I were looking now, I'd throw in another car ... The 99 Mustang GT is an
awesome car. Had a '92  convertible b4 and it's amazing how much better this
one is from the seats to the stereo to the design, it's great. If you could
find one of these for a good price, you would not be disappointed. Otherwise
from your list, I would say the Accura ...

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning Bruce? ;)

What I do when it comes to making a major expense is to get as much
information as I can, from as many disparate sources as I can, digest it,
and then and only then come to a final decision.

Nowhere did I ask anyone to make a decision for me.  I didn't ask "Which of
these cars should I buy?"  I'm just looking for feedback, preferably from
first hand experience, re: the pros and cons of each of the cars listed.
Since the focus of this newsgroup is cars, and since I read this newsgroup
regularly and have a rough idea of who the posters are, I thought this would
be an appropriate place to ask.  Are the letters submitted to the various
special interest or owner's sites any more or less valid?

I'm surprised that nobody has said to go for the Toyota. Based on price and
reliability, I'd would have figured it as one of the top choices. I'd figure
the Nissan at the bottom of the list. The other 3 all being good cars, it
would be a personal decision based on whether you are most interested in
style, performance or reliability.
So, what sim do you plan on driving it in? Will it install without errors?
Does it come with a female navigator?
