F1RS: Ghosts....brilliant!

I haven't ever seen this option in sims before (though I believe they're
present in several others).  But Ghosts (previous best laps you've
accomplished and then transposed into your current lap) are the best thing
since sliced bread!  What a marvelous idea!  Racing yourself can only help you
to achieve better and better lap times as you can see exactly how you did
before, and attempt to get just a bit faster.  Coming up on a corner?  Brake a
little bit later and try to hold it.  Coming out of a chicane?  Try to
accelerate out faster without loosing grip.  Hats off to Ubisoft for
implementing this awesome feature!!!
If you race F1RS, and youe haven't tried ghost laps yet, you owe it to
yourself to add even more depth to your experience.

This is by far the best learning tool Ive ever used in a Racing sim...my
times at Spa have dropped into the 1.51 ranges...nice..when I started
yesterday I was running 1.54's....damn this sim is brilliant and I
cannot wait for my new puter...

I to think it is a great feature. But I have the feeling that he isn't
always displaying the right lap. Sometimes the ghost spins into the grass
(and I surely didn't in a hotlap) or the ghost is behind me and I'm still
0.5 slower !!!!

The only thing I'd complain about is that if you beat the Ghost it
doesn't auto update to your newest time, so your always racing the
original Ghost unless you load your new fastest time. It's been a
while now but if I remember correctly the Ghosts in Pod used to auto
update, another good Ubisoft racer.

Yes I've seen this.
I've got to pay more attention as I'm wondering if it has anything to
do with the skill level that the ghost was recorded at.
It could be that your using an expert skill level and the ghost was
recorded at pro. But now I'm not even sure if it allows you to load
different skill level ghosts. I'll have to take another look.

I agree with John. This is a *great* feature!

I've beaten my head against the wall trying to beat a ghost lap,
sometimes completely forgetting that it's myself that I'm racing
against.  What a trip to be out in front of the ghost car, seeing it in
my mirrors, knowing that if I just can stay in front for a couple more
corners, I'll have a new quick time, braking a tad later here, nicking a
curb there...drat!  Spun it again!  Shoot!

When I finally beat the ghost, it's a fantastic high.

Exactly....great fun. Now to add to that feature allow me to put more
than one on the track and give me the option to have them solid. Talk
about racing...

The ghost's are a duplicate of previous laps with no traffic though.
The extra cars will be running into each other often as they use the
same lines as previous "lone" laps.

Guess they could make it so they can just go through each other
without wrecking, but imagine four solid ghost cars converging into
each other, becoming a single solid blob.
That would probably look funky, to say the least.  ;)

You need to install the patch from Ubisoft 1.05, and you will see everything.

You can see your ghosts in the rear view mirror?
When racing against ghosts my mirrors are a solid white for some
reason, I cant even see the track.

I think Papadoc was saying he would prefer to race 20 odd Papadocs (pun not
originally intended) than the AI.  So would I.

The International Ubi Soft site has the patches (there are D3D and 3DFX)
available for download.
About 1Mb in size.

Here's the 64-million dollar answer...

Papyrus should be listening to this - I mean, how hard would it
be for the ghost cars to "write" an LP file in the track directory,
and then when you race against it, it becomes an AI with one big
difference: it uses the LP file with YOUR attributes.  =)

OK Papy, where's my check?  ;)

Cheers!

Silly me, I actually have that patch but forgot to re-install it after
a HD format that I was forced into.
Thanks for the reminder :)

It's also quite frustrating to see you win on the straights, but become a
complete sucker in the corners.

Happened to me yesterday on Melbourne.

On the straights, I run away BIG TIME from the ghost, but in corners, he
overtakes me again. Damn... tha gap is really huge on the straights, about 2
seconds.

As to the people wishing solid cars... that's not the idea of the Ghost time
attack, it's to hone your setup and driving skills, thusly including the
ideal line.
