What's up with RAS?

I'm in RAS since 1998 (RS2, GPL) and it was my daily MUST lecture. There
were so many posts every day, that it took 1/2 an hour to read them all amd
I found informations about all the updates first here. And you found all the
news of all the racing sim comms here.

Now you have a forum for every mod and every sim on 1000 sites and you have
to look here and there. You need some hours to search all of the forums, you
are interested in, because there is no one platform anymore.

Do you have any ideas, how to make RAS as vivid as it was before: The
platform for all the informations about racing sims?

Time machine? :-)

IMO the rise and rise of forums over newsgroups has a lot to do with
people being able to access the net at work/school. I may be wrong, but
it's hard to see why forums would be so popular for any other reason,
because they're a truly lousy way of communicating! I still enjoy
newsgroups because I can download all new messages quickly and speed
read/ignore. It means I can keep in touch with everything that's going on
even if I don't read all of it. Doing that with even the best forums is
impossible unless you're getting paid to sit at your desk doing nothing
all day :-)

I'm still waiting for someone to produce a universal "forum reader" that
can be used like a newsreader. But that'd just help kill off newsgroups,
so it's a bit of a dilemma.

Anyway, to answer your question seriously I think we... er... um.... yea,
I was right about the time machine. I suppose we could always raise the
level of informed debate to such a high standard that folk flock back
here, but I think the time machine's more likely ;-)

That's probably a product of people ***ing here.  Game X comes out, and
naturally a lot of people talk about it.  But then you have the people who are
NOT interested in Game X that start complaining.  Instead of just ignoring
threads about Game X, they end up saying "We don't care about Game X - get your
OWN damn forum for that!"
So they did...

Certainly for me, my broadband provider doesn't provide a news server, so
I'm forever searching around for free ones!  I don't have a news server at
work either, so have to use a free one there too.  Where I worked before you
couldn't even get newsgroups because you could only get certain ports
externally.

Also, people like big flashy graphical pages rather than standard plain
text, especially now as bandwidth isn't so much of a problem.

At least all those stupid arguments about top-posting and snipping text and
posting binaries should be gone forever!

And some leagues post some stuff here AND other stuff in their own web
forum so you have to look in both places!

I blame the advent of those stupid emoteicons and animated gifs!

This was my argument against using web forums, but it happened anyway :(

I'm all in favour of providers dumping the binary groups.
My provider thankfully offers a separate text-only server
which means I don't have to share its bandwidth with the
pirates. I suspect that it's piracy that will kill
newsgroups altogether though, sadly.

That's my point. Workplaces can block access to groups to
stop people wasting time, but it's impossible to block
access to forums.

Ah yes, the "look how big my impressive sig pic is"
generation. Good riddance :-)

People have bad manners wherever you go. Forums just have
different types of bad manners and laziness.... which is
always at the root cause of such arguments IMO.

I ended up dropping out of one of my GPL leagues because they switched to a
forum for communication.  I don't like forums, and it wasn't worth the hassle
of not being able to download mail and group messages all at once, like I do
now.
