At last! After two and half years and several hundred attempts I've beaten
Doug Arnao's time for the Nurburgring - just. I finally put together a lap
where got more or less everything right and didn't fall for trying something
extra anywhere and the result was 8.21.79, 0.14 seconds quicker than the
estimable Mr Arnao. That was some 7 seconds off my PB and drops my GPLRank
handicap to the point where I can smell that minus sign.

I'd like to thank (in particular - there are far too many people whose
advice has been valuable) JensSchumi for his LogiCorner page for the tip to
eradicate the slackness in my LWFF, and the author of
gn_nurb_fer_8m07_43.fe1 (Graham Nash?) for the Ferrari set-up I was using
(although putting the time in there shows up how far I'm still off the
pace...) and finally my new Athlon which I'm sure has made driving smoother.

So then Eldred, the gauntlet is thrown down. My times are comparable with
yours (within a second mostly, and you're quicker at Zandvoort and [spit]
Mexico) with glaring one exception: 16+ seconds at Nurburgring.

Next target - a decent time at Monaco, where I'm 1.57 seconds slower than
Dave Kaemmer.

(The 777 is not a coincidence. I've made a deal with this bloke and he's
promised me that when I actually go negative I'll be 666th :-)

gets them all right on every lap" - Von Trips after the 1961 German Grand

P.S. The shine was taken off the day a little later when my home team
(Coventry City, whom I've supported through thin and thin for more years
than I care to remember) were relegated from the Premier Division after 34
years. But nothing could wipe the silly grin off my face.

Don't stop Tony !! Nows your chance to take off another 5 seconds !! I got
stuck around the the 8.21-8.24 mark for ages ( months ) then suddenly found
" that special place inside my head " and it's 8.20 , 8.19 , 8.18 , 8.16 and
I even know where to find the rest - not sure I can but hey ...
PS. this all happened during VROC five or eight lappers not training - I
think it's that intensity of mind thing - if you want to go quicker in the
end all you can do is raise your game.

I know what you mean, most of my PBs come in races, it's just that I've
found the 'Ring too long. I always got frustrated after a couple of laps.
Maybe now that I've mastered it (ha!) I should try another race there.

Thanks for the encouragement

I've been running 3-5 lappers on VROC for one of my leagues.  I've turned a
bunch of 8:4x(42,43,45,48).  I haven't broken into the 30's since I set my PB
of 8:38 last Christmas... :(

Phooey!  No contest, Tony.  Even if I beat you at the ring, you'd still be 10
or so seconds faster.  I can't seem to gain 5 seconds, let alone the 25 I need
to pass you...
I also just got a new Athlon 1.2G - it hasn't leped yet.  I don't seem to have
Graeme's setup, but I have one from Roland Ehnstrom that he ran 7:58 with.  I'm
about a minute slower, with the same setup.

Wow, that's an old setup :-) You should look around for some of the
newer ones (Try Marc Mercer's) and you could immediately take about 4-5
seconds off your time.

It ain't the set-up, it's the driver that's a few seconds off the pace!

You should still try :-) If I remember rightly my setup was for GPL 1.0,
some of the newer setups should give you a much more balanced car and
allow you to go quicker.
