F1RS Freezing/Joystick dropout

Folks,
                I have tried everything to get my F1RS to work correctly.
                Problem is that the game randomly freezes within the first 3
laps.
                sometimes the joystick disables and enables during play.

                Framerate is fine.
                Specs of system are as follows.

                P166 running 4MB Orchid Righteous 3D Card (voodoo 1 3dfx)
                Have 500Meg free memory on hardrive, changing virtual memory
to 300MB doesn't work
                Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad
                ESS 1868 pnp Audio Drive 3D
                Windows98
                I have had the game running succesfully at one stage and
then the joystick stopped and I crashed etc.

                If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated for my
sanity.
