I'm poo at Spa and I need help..pleeeease!

I'd really appreciate some advice, or, even better, a critique of my replay
if anyone wants a laugh.

My pb is a 3:22.91 in the Eagle and I know I'm at least 3 secs off the pace.
But I'm not sure where I'm losing time.

I manage to get through Masta (no, no braking!) at around 165mph.  I know
the quick guys are at 170mph+; I guess that needs practice and some more
nerves!  I don't brake for Stavelot either, but I've always struggled with
the braking point (please don't tell me I shouldn't be braking!) and line
for La Carriere.

These are just off the top of my head.  I'm not for one second suggesting
these might be my only weak corners.

Any tips would be greatly received.  Like I say, I'm happy to send anyone my
replay.

Cheers,

Jonesy

Ok, let's have a look at your antics, the antispam in my return address
shouldn't be too hard to decipher. I'm not that much quicker, but perhaps I
can be of assistance.

For me the gap betweem 3m23.01s and my current PB of 3m20.44s (I'm hoping
this lap is included in the boxing day Spa GP replay as I forgot to save
mine as I exited) was bridged at Eau Rouge (line change + driving it in 4th
instead of 3rd gear), Burnenville (line change) and the two right handers at
La Carriere (earlier turn-in at first RH, earlier braking point and better
technique at 2nd). As a side note I do tend to left-foot tap the brake at
Stavelot instead of just coasting/scrubbing. I take the first part slightly
too hot in 5th and tap the brake as I downshift tyo 4th so as to keep the
car low in the turn, hopefully resulting in getting back on the power as
hard and as early as possible.

Interesting.  I can get through Masta at 170-175(Lotus), but my PB is only
3:22.2x...  My 5-10mph advantage at that one corner must be eaten up on the
rest of the lap.  I can get through the first right-hander at La Carriere
without braking, but I'd think you'd *have* to brake(a bit) at the second
right-hander.

Most of my time loss is in Stavelot(well, at least a second).  I *know* this,
but I simply canNOT maintain the same speed that others do.  If I try to hold
that speed, I'm in the wall(or hedges).
Please send me your lap.  I'm curious to see how our speeds match up.

Jan,

Thanks for your tips.  After changing the gearing on the Eagle a little,
using 4th for Eau Rouge and a line change for La Carriere (thanks for the
ideas!), I've improved my pb to a 3:20.40, just off the Papy Benchmark.

I'd hoped I'd be nearer Eldred on GPLRank, but the little tinker is going
for it in the Lotus and I'm still slower!  He is older than me,
though....<g>

Ouch.... I just sent you a 730kb message intending to get you down into that
time range. Oh well.... perhaps it'll show you a finer point somewhere.
Happy downloading!! ;-))

Heyy! :-)
It sounds like you at least know a bit about tweaking setups.  That puts you
ahead of me on the skill tree.
I'm driving the Lotus more simply because I'm using it in TWO leagues.  I had
previously driven only the Ferrari and Cooper.  The Lotus has the potential to
cause me problems because of its 'twitchy' nature.  I had reservations before
choosing it, but so far it's worked out ok.  I set my Spa PB of 3:20.08 in Qual
for a race Saturday morning - and was STILL back in 7th on the grid...

That's better than my PB. I wonder what I am doing wrong.

Eldred, my setup tweaking skills, in the instance as an example, are limited
to using Chris Moses' Spa setup (all my setups are based on his) with
Gregor's gear ratios.  I'm a long way off from tinkering with suspension on
the fly! <g>
