V3 image quality for GPL - compares with v2x00?

by Mark Daviso » Fri, 07 May 1999 04:00:00

In a couple of months I -may- be a position to replace my ageing P200 -
depends on the size of my bonus (if any) and how much kids cost to run
(first due in a week).

I've got a Voodoo1 and V2100 in here and prefer the rendition quality by
far.  I've heard V3 is a vast improvement image wise over the previous 2
versions, but how does it compare to rendition?
I'll be looking at either PII350 or Celeron 400 (I'm not comfortable hacking
around inside the PC and overclocking) if that makes a difference to what I
should choose.

This is a primarily papy machine.

Try to get your wife to ***feed... formula costs a bundle! (besides, when the
baby cries in the middle of the night, there's no reason for you to get up!)
Then take the extra money & lavish yourself in computer accessories!
Good luck with the newborn...

Stop scaring the poor guy! There's nothing he can do about it anymore.
For the rest of us - take my advice and become an uncle rather than a
father: all the fun with the little brat, and you can return him/her
to their rightful owners anytime. :)

Hi Mark;

Yes, I understand the dilemma you have.
I have a Celeron 300a overclocked to 450.  I'm also running a Voodoo 2 card at
800 x 600.  For the most part I get very good frame rates and graphics quality
using this on GPL.
In almost every review I have read, writers seem to have the opinion that
Sierra is way behind the times by using Rendition.  I'm very partial to the
voodoo cards, I have had nothing but great luck with them.  All posts now are
indicating that GPL can run in 1280 x 1024 without any slowdown on a machine of
my quality.  This card is built for speed.  I will be purchasing one in the near
future.
If you are purchasing a celeron, please insure it is the "a" version (eg. 400a)
The "a" version has some L2 cache whereas the original versions did not.  I have
also read that Papyrus simulations can be L2 dependant.
For my money, I would be getting the celeron 400a with a V3.  The rendition may
work well with papyrus games, but for every other company, Rendition is a flop.
I have saved some other posts from this Newsgroup on V3.  I can forward them to
you if you like.
Good luck with the new baby.

Regards

Boy, put your foot in it, didn't you? ;-)

I'll actually answer your question.

Ok, I went from a 2100(Stealth II) to a V3/3500. I find the V3 better than
the
2100 by a good margin. Didn't even have to play with the gamma correction
at all. Do know I have a PII450(NOT overclocked either),
so the 'processor intensity' of the V3 is not apparent. Don't know how much
it'll scale down with a 350 or 400. It setup REALLY easy, is very reliable
in
windows and games(N1999). Don't know how it'll do CART however, as I
havn't reinstalled it since. It's really nice having 1 video card in the AGP
slot instead of 2 PCI , taking up 3 slots because the Voodoo2 card gets
so damn hot that it needs more space.
Definitely worth it.
Later. -Mark

Absolutely correct.

reason for you to get up!)

Correct again. This man's a genius.

Also ... If there's anything you want to do as a couple you better get it in
before the " joyful" occasion. Movies, restaurants, outings of any kind, a
simple conversation or cup of tea and biscuits, etc. It may be some time
before you can enjoy such simple pleasures again.

Good luck.

SNIP

Sorry for knitpicking, but the Celerons above the 300A does not have the "A"
term anymore. The cacheless Celerons were only the 266 (or 400 for us
OC'ers) and 300 mhz versions. The C333 and above have 128 kb L2 cache, but
no "A" in the name :-).

I bought a Voodo3 (switched from rendition) this past week, based on
what I've been reading on this board. Although it did improve my frame
rates I don't think the image quality is on par with a rendition card.
Also to get GPL to work I had to add a patch for 3DFX. This patch
allowed me to play GPL, BUT the main screen is a small square in the
upper left corner of the monitor, not to easy to read. (17") I am not
happy about that, why can't it be a full screen image like my old
rendition card? (The racing screen is ok) I can't get N1999, ACES or
allot of my older games to work at all and I'm really pissed about that.
Maybe I just take this junk back and get a super duper Rendition card.
Every thing worked with my old card just fine, all I was trying to do
was improve my frame rates, not give myself a giant headache.

Mike
Any help would be appreciated.
