GP2 question: dx2-66

by Alex L » Fri, 09 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have a friend who owns a dx2-66 and he's wondering if gp2 is at
all playable with it. He wouldn't mind no texture, lores etc etc..
But will it be better than GP1 on his machine. If there were to
be any improvement over GP1 for him, I'm sure he'd buy it.

What kind of framerate can he expect?

        Thanks,
                Alex

I've got DX2-66 (not for long..) and I think Gp2 is playable with nothing
but track texture on. The game estimates 22 or so fps but it rarely can
manage it. Pros. occ. varies a lot on different tracks; Brazil is mostly
100% or less and Monaco 150-200%. When occupancy is near 100% you get the
fps game promises and naturally over 100% it slows down. There's no visual
improvement over GP1 (VGA), but the realism and AI is a whole different
chapter. With P200 and SVGA you almost think you are watching the real
race on telly! I think the game is must buy even with 486...

It depends on whether he can race with slow frame rates.  For me (a dx2/66
owner as well), hotlappin on most tracks in SVGA is not a problem.  For
example, on Monza I can get 15 fps svga when I'm alone on the track with no
textures and only smoke and track in mirrors.  It also depends on your friends
financial situation.  I'm not in the situation where I can go out and buy a
P200 to play a game on...  Nevertheless, GP2 is definitely worth the money,
even for dx2 owners.

LOW framerates

If you have no trackside details and no textures, its playable at up to
15fps at least in VGA.

If your friend has a fast graphics card, he will be satisfied. But Ive
seen GP2 on a DX2/66 with a slow card, and ouch!, it wasnt very
playable (even at low detail). But then again an another machine it came
up to 18fps. So I guess it will work pretty well (for most of us) on a
DX2/66, but dont expect more graphics than the absolute minimum or else
youll be dissapointed.

Best,
Kristian

I've got an upgrade processor- 486dx4-100mhz, and it is totally
playable in VGA. Forget SVGA, forget any details while *racing*, but
you can have some for pracitce, or just tooling around.

I'd say buy it- at the very worst, in a few years, we'll all have
better machines, and I think the game is good enough to last a year or
two easily. And I think if he really wants to race, he'll MAKE IT WORK
on a dx2-66!

I have been playing GP2 on my DX2/66 with a Western Digital Video Card
(slow?) and I find it very playable with a few textures on in practice,
but start a race and it doesn't matter whether you turn EVERYTHING off -
it will still get processor occupancy well above 100% (slow motion) due
to the AI and large plotting requirements for the other cars.  It is
still playable, just be prepared for the first few laps to take a while.

Unless you enjoy watching slo-mo replays, I wouldn't even try to replay
anything.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

        Hi!

I have a DX2/66 with 16M of ram and a speed star pro
graphic card and i fing the game very playable.
Ive got almost all the details up in front and
non in the mirrors i think.  Ive also set the
track side objects to low or medium and i easily
get 15 fps.  In fact the only detail i turn of
is the sky detail which slows down the most.

Ive also noticed that my CPU is way overloaded,
like 168% but it doesnt seem to slow down the game
at all.  And no major slow down in a race either.

Perhaps its a bit slower than indycar 1 and the vga
graphics arent as good as indycar in my opinion
but the game is very playable and i could make it way
faster by taking down some details :)

                        Hope this helps!

                                                Fred.
