What is a sim and isn't a sim is a matter of personal taste. Frankly,
the actual simulation of the tracks and sounds is far better than GP2.
And it is a bear to drive; easily as on the edge as GP2 or even ICR2,
and far less forgiving on the grass or sand. But it doesn't have the
"I'll be the crew chief, mechanic, owner and driver of the car" sim
feel that Papyrus set the standard for many years ago, which most sims
like GP2 follow. You are the driver, that is it, not much garage input
or tweaking. Your job is to forget about setups and see if you can
outdrive your opponents.
I think the drive model is pretty good. The AI of the other drivers
*really sucks*. They are the most agressive jerks you could ever hope
to imagine, as if they seem to know that, uh, they can't be pushed off
the course and that you can! Sort of like indestructable Eddie
Irvines, I guess would be the most recent apt comparison.
Psygnosis has the default view being "behind and above." It is a lousy
view, and fortunately you can change it. The only view worth racing is
the "down on the front wing" view, but I think they didn't make it
default because, well, you really have to learn the tracks to drive
that way, which is pretty similar to what I guess you'd see as a
driver. It really isn't very different than being in a pretend***pit
in ICR2 or GP2- except 1/3 of the screen isn't taken up with a faux
***pit. It is as if you are looking through the camera on the wing,
complete with the stripped in Tag Heur (sp) split times and all.
I like both GP2 and Psyg's F1; when you get sick after a while of one,
the other looks good.
