Hi,
after reading all about it on this forum, I've just ordered GPL and
await its delivery by the end of the week. It seems like I could be on
for a serious ***ion here. This with GP3 round the corner.....D'oh!
So in short, what do I need to know? Patches, addons, good sites, etc.
Thanks for any help,
Gareth Evans

I'm a newbie like you. The main thing to do when you get the game is to
practice, practice, practice. Forget the add-ons, just practice. But you
will need the patch (adds force feedback support):

not that it's relevant to this, but I have two unopened copies of GPL for
sale for 10.49 plus shipping.  That's what I paid for them, I'm not trying
to make any profit.

Thanks everyone, it's here tomorrow I hope.
Daxe - looking at the price you got yours at Special Reserve, no? That's
exactly what I paid for it.

I already owned GPL from way back.  I got it for Xmas from my Mother-in-Law
the year it was released.  I have seen in here on several occasions that
people either couldn't find the sim or found it but it was 60$USD or
something ridiculous, so when I saw several copies of GPL for $9.99 at
"Media Play" (Hadley, Massachusetts, USA) in its original packaging, I
mentioned it in here thinking I might be able to help someone out.

The same day I mentioned their availability in here a few weeks ago, some
fellow emailed me and said he was interested.  I told him 9.99 plus .50
sales tax (what I paid) plus 4.51 to cover shipping. I stopped the next day
and bought 3 copies.  He sent me a postal money order for 20$!  I sent GPL
to him the next day.

So, I have two unopened copies for which I paid 10.49 USD.  If anyone wants
them for whatever reason (cheap gift to get someone into serious sim racing
comes to mind...) I will send them for 10.49 plus shipping (3.20 for first
class 2.80 for 3rd class in the USA)  No extra charges, just trying to pile
on some good karma.

I'm so glad I don't live in the US. Every time I try to understand the
American system of sales taxes, my head starts spinning. Why on earth
don't US shops do what British ones do - include the tax (VAT in our
case) in the price on the sticker, then apply discounts for those who
are eligible?

Well, for a start, their "sales tax" is a lot less than ours, David....ours
in the UK is 17.5%, can you believe that? From my time in Ohio, I think it
was about 6 3/4% there...
But Americans are used to adding tax to their goods, it's as much second
nature to them as the intricacies of the lbw law are to us!!

Doesn't it vary from state to state?

That's a silly argument - the same one used by some PC advertisers when
they were told to start quoting VAT-inclusive prices (which most now
do). And the lbw law is a *completely* different kettle of fish - that,
of course, is not subject to the vagaries of logic ;-)

Yes, it varies state to state, county to county, and even town to town.
Here in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado, USA, the total sales tax is
approximately 7.75%.

Sales taxes vary from state to state, as do income taxes.  We pay a federal
income tax and each state has their own policy on the matter of taxation.
Some do not add any.  Furthermore, some things are taxed and some are not.
"Necessities" are not supposed to be taxed;  clothing is not taxed, nor is
food at a grocery store (in massachusetts, anyway) but food served in a
restaurant and prescription *** are taxed.  We also get yearly 'excise'
taxes on expensive stuff like cars and boats in massachusetts as a function
of the estimated value

Some municipalities also add their own taxes, such as new york city.  Many
cities have special taxes dedicated to staying in hotels and things, too.

I am one of those nut cases who thinks income taxes should be abolished.
After all,  the country survived without them until early in the 20th
century and they were promised to be 1/2 of 1% and no more when introduced
(can now reach 50% or so very easily)

VAT type taxes are brought up whenever tax reform is discussed and they are
always shot down.  A national sales tax of approx. 17.5% (of which there is
none) is also suggested as an alternative to income taxes.

I just know I am sick of having my paycheck***d by the government,
considering much of the useless and self-serving nonsense it pays for.

Yes (including some states with no sales tax at all), but I don't recall
any state with a sales tax above 10%.

I never knew that.  I thought it was per state, not per county...
