Well.. I only played it for a few minutes before I had to leave but just so
you know.

It's basically Nascar 99... it looks the same... sure they've added support
for higher graphics and smoke effects...etc.. but it looks the same.
After that.. the sounds are what remind that this is a whole new game.  When
I step on the gas.. I can hear the tires jumping up and down on the pavement
as the *** continues to peel away.  When I hit the wall.. it sounds like
thunder!!  When I spin out and go sideways on the track.. my tires screech
to a very high pitch.   When cars drive by, I can hear their 700+hp engines
roaring.  Folks.. the sounds in this game are truly amazing.  Although I
noticed a selection in the sound options called "Reflections", it was grayed
out so I couldn't select it.
The engine sounds great as you go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd.. but as you max
out 4th gear, I hear some unnatural background noise... noise that sounds
like something electronic (it's the only way I can explain it).  I'm
guessing this is because I'm using an AWE64 Gold??  I have 16bit sounds
turned on.  I don't know what it is.  I am hoping that this game is easier
to add new sounds in.
I only raced IMS and from what I saw.. it was just like being there (I only
live a few miles away).

The intro is the best!!  It is at least twice as big as the Nascar 99 intro
and it shows alot of drivers faces and cars.
I haven't really tested the AI..

If you have a Pentium II Celeron (overclocking works fine with the game) 400
or higher.. I suggest you buy this game (during install, it has 3 options
for computer systems.. P200, PII 200+ and finally PII 400+)
If you have something less... well.. you  can lower the resolution.. but
then.. it really WOULD look like Nascar 99.

How are the N3 physics?

That's what most of us GPL ***s are waiting to hear, I know the
physics will not be up to par with GPL but did they improve the
physics from Nascar99/N2 ?

I might pick up N3 since it expect a VROC type of experience with N3 will
be fun, but only if the physics have improved from N2.

Anyone have any 1st impressions on the physics model?

Seeyas on the track.

No question that it looks much sharper and sounds a WHOLE lot better
than its Pappy, and--as we've been promised--the AI cars are a little
more aggressive, fighting you for position and not just caving in or
running into you.  There are some setup touches the value of which
remain to be seen--grill tape, for instance--although I like the idea of
having a little more control over what you to do more on pit stops than
in the past. Still same lousy rear stall, though.
Biggest addition: the Brickyard, of course.
Biggest loss: Pocono, which I found a challenging track--loved to race
there.
Another disappointment: many WC drivers missing (on a quick glance I
noticed Ward Burton, Jimmy Spencer, Jerry Nadeau, Dave Marcis, Joe
Nemechek, Sterling Marlin, and*** Trickle out of the WC list, though
Trickle's in the BGN list).  To fill out the field of 43, Papyrus has
put in cars with numbers like 121 and names that are probably those of
the programers' brothers-in-law and artists' accountant.
I have no doubt we'll find many other shortcomings here, but it's still
nice to have an update for one of the three or four best computer games
ever created.

Now I always hated Pocono, but if it's in the WC schedule I'd like it to be
in the sim.  Do you have any idea why it's not there (I appreciate that
you've just bought the damn thing and aren't a Papy employee :-))?  They
still race there don't they?

1st impressions on the physics:
they're subtly better than N2, but you're still able to do things like go
way too deep at martinsville and just stand on the brake to recover, for
instance (i did about 50 laps there, 50 at bristol and 20 at tally, and
about 10 at indy). overall, the driving model seems refined, but not
revolutionary.
of course, i'm spoiled by GPL.....

a bit disappointed in the FF so far. haven't tried internet play.

OTOH, the graphics are beautiful (screen shots don't do justice) and the AI
seems much improved. like the setup options. the sound is amazing.
smoke/dust are nice.

interesting choice of spotter voice (it's obvious who it is; a rather famous
young cup driver who pushes pepsi and paint). i preferred ned's voice,
personally.

all in all, if you're a fan of N2 and not on an absolute shoestring, i'd
highly recommend it.

That's what most of us GPL ***s are waiting to hear, I know the

They do, twice a year.  I suspect the Pocono ownership simply jacked up
the licensing rights to the point where Sierra said,***it.   Hard to
imagine Dave Marcis and Jerry Nadeau doing the same thing.  But before
long the paintbrush geniuses, like Chris Fredericks (if I haven't
butchered the name) will fill in those holes.  I'll miss Pocono because
the turns were interesting, the braking and shifting demands were
different a course of that length, and of course the shape was unique.

Please read my "Nascar Racing 3  - Additional N2/NR99/Icr2 tracks FAQ" and
be happy to know that you will be able to race all the N2, NR99, Icr2 and in
the future GPL tracks in Nascar Racing 3, very easily.

And yes, Pocono is fun with N3 ;-)

Sounds good, I'll probably pick it up this weekend and take it for a spin.

Thanks for the quick impressions on the physics.

I DO NOT SOUND LIKE JEFF GORDON!!!!!!!! There just had to get that out of my system.<G>

Actually, according to the credits at the back of the Game Manual, the Spotter's Voice is Scott Sanford and the Crew Chief's voice is Shawn Wise.  I guess Scott just has to live with sounding like Gordo, just like the spotter's voice in N2 has to live with sounding like Ned (i.e., it wasn't Ned in N2/N99).

That by itself makes buying N3 more attractive.  Try taking a Taurus
through Masta Kink flat out.  Still, independent physics models for
each wheel, etc., would have been awfully nice.  GPL still is king,
even if only 40K of us bought it.  Bet N3 sells >500K easily,
regardless of its apparently old tweaked physics model.

Okay, call me old-fashioned, but ICR2 is still my favorite Papyrus
sim.  I would LOVE to be able to convert the GPL tracks to ICR2.  Is
there, or will there be, a convertor available to the public to do
so???
