GPL Track Guides? Other tips on getting faster?

by Joe6 » Thu, 01 Feb 2001 15:50:03

Does anyone know where I can get the GPL track guides? The site they
used to be on (
lightsoutracing.simplenet.com/trackguides/gpl/index.html) seems to be
down.

I'm one of those people who just can't get faster at GPL with
practice. It's not about practice. I need practical information on the
best way to get around the tracks. The only thing I've found on the
net that helps me improve is the track guides, and now I can't find
them. Argh! Can anyone help?

Are there any other resources on the web that would help? Everyone
just says "practice". Well, I know a few people who love the game, and
play it a quite a bit, but who are stuck at a relatively slow level
(e.g., 133 - 135 at Monza). We like the game but it gets frustrating
when you can't get better. It would be great if someone could put
together a step-by-step guide on how to get faster.

Joe,

Yes it has been down for a week or two now. I found them useful for
some extra insight into a particular corner but not to try and follow
like a script, theres just too much to think about and mostly
going faster is about technique and perception.

You could take a look at these, I only discovered them yesterday :
http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/circuits.htm

Practice throwing the discus like a frisbee all you want but you aint
never gonna win no gold medal, you need to know what you should
be doing and practice that. It doesn't come naturaly to most people.

I did a small driver training package a few months ago which may
help you, it's on the web now here :
http://users.bart.nl/~hansvd/school/

Pick up the replays also though as they demonstrate the old saying
that "smooth=fast" and "going slower to go quicker" etc.

There are also some other links on the main page that may help.

Hi Maxx,

you want but you aint
naturaly to most people.

What an incredibly refreshing attitude! I'm dying
for information like a thirsty man in the desert;
your web site is like a drink of cool water. It
is obvious to me that you are a teacher.

I read your GPLegs course, and I must say it is
all very enlightening. Many of the bad habits -
braking late and hard, not being smooth at all,
bad lines, etc. - are exactly what I find myself
doing. Then I get frustrated at my slowness and
things go downhill from there.

I'm going to read through your course a couple
more times, to make sure it sinks in, and then go
do some driving. I appreciate the point you keep
hammering about patience, so I will forget about
speed and work on early and smooth
braking/cornering for a while, as a starting
point.

I'll repost in a few days to let everyone know
how it's working for me.

Thanks again for taking the time to write your
course and put it up on the web!

Joe,

[snip]

Glad you like the package, just to say though
that it's not my web site, nor my html. I wrote the
package a few months ago.  The site is run by
Hans van Dam and he kindly converted my text
and put it on his site.

If you've not checked out his "Ultimate Links"
section, you should, it's a goldmine of links to
pretty much every GPL related site there is;

The URL for it is : http://users.bart.nl/~hansvd/links.html

Cheers

Maxx
