OT:What to upgrade?

My fellow sim racing gamers. Only you could answer this question for me. I
have been to sites such as tomshardware.com etc. They do have good articles
but you guys and gals run the games I wish to get better my frame rates in.
Right now I get around 21 fps coming out corner # 4 in NASCAR with quite
allot of detail turned on. I do not want to turn the detail down. Only you
people have the answer this question. What would be the best upgrade from
here.

Video
Memory
CPU

I have a:

2200 XP AMD CPU
MSI MB KT400 KT4 ULTRA
Leadtek A250 TI4400
256 Megs ram
Soundblaster Audigy card.

I play NASCAR 2003, dirt track racing 2 etc.
What would be the best upgrade for more frame rates partially in NASCAR
2003? Or if anyone has a special machine setup they would like to offer TIA.

Thanks
Dave

"hawk0388"
You don't say which screen resolution you are running or which track,
both can make a big difference.  You have a fairly good system.  The TI4400
will run very fast PROVIDED you don't use FSAA or the highest screen
resolutions.  To get better framerates you should disable the last three
shadow options, they are big fps killers.  You should also not exceed the
1280x720 screen size.  Some systems run better with 16bit color depth
settings, if you are using 32bit color, you should compare the two to see
if there is a marked dropoff.
also the D3d and opengl rasterizers may provide different fps results,
you should try both.  And you should try coolbits or rivatuner to make sure
the vsync feature is disabled.  (and properly installing new drivers makes
a big difference.)

Unless you're talking about 1600x1200x32 with 8X FSAA, something is wrong
with your PC if you only get that.

Without a doubt, get more ram.

Ram will hardly help FPS... just loading times, h/d swapping etc...unless he
has a stuttering problem its a waste of money.. I get higher fps with a
2000+ and a GF4 mx400 so i'd be looking at your system configuration more
than upgrading it because thats where your cheapest and biggest gains will
be

The jump from 256 to 512 ram is never a waste of money......

Are you overclocking the cpu? Thats some free fps if you don't go wild with
it. Have you run 3dmark? I'd like to see the results and compare to see
where you might get the best help. I have a 2100+ (1.7ghz) o/c to 2.3ghz
with a radeon9700pro. I have everything on but building shadows/reflections
and get a low of 30fps from the back of the pack on the front stretch at
Daytona. This is at 1600x1200 2xFSAA and 8xAF.  I would post a screen shot
but it is 5megs!! Maybe I should convert it to jpeg....of course then you
lose all the quality.

That's already pretty stout.

My recommendation?  The NEXT high-end video card that comes out that blows
away what is available now.

IMHO, there is not enough to be gained from anything shipping today.

As far as the processor goes, you'd have to go with the 3Ghz AMD Barton to
see major improvements, and they are very, very expensive.  Even the 2800 +
is expensive.  AMD chips aren't the bargains they used to be.

Personally, I think you are in the "sit tight" period right now.  There just
isn't enough bang-for-the-buck for you right now.
