What is your highest minimum framerate in GTR2002 ??

by me » Fri, 17 Jan 2003 01:22:22

I am loving this mod. However it is making me start to think about getting a
new computer and videocard. I am currently getting between 16 to 53 frames
per second at Interlagos with all graphics options set to max at 1024 X 768
rez , 2x FSAA, with a 10 car field ( a 22 car field requires major
reductions in graphics options to get a decent frame rate).  The framerate
changes drastically at different places on the track, but generally stays at
about 30 fps over 75 percent of the track. It's when it dips into the ***s
or stutters on replays that really bugs me, not so much from the incar
racing view , but on TV camera replays. I am currently running a Athlon 1.4
GHZ and a voodoo 5. I was wondering if it is currently possible to get a
constant 50 plus frames per second with all graphics options set to max ,
and a 22 car field with at least 2x antialiasing, at 1024 X 768, using the
latest hardware. What is the (approximate) highest minimum FPS that anyone
has gotten under the above circumstances.
Do I need to wait for a 5 ghz cpu and a geforce 5 to get a constant 50 plus
frames per second on every track with all graphics maxed out and a 22 car
field.

I have over 60 fps all the time....over 150 at times....but for more than
75% of the time the fps is above 80.

XP2100+
Ati 9700 Pro
512 DDR 2100

To buy the XP2100+ is about 85,the 9700 Pro is 240 and you will be sorted.

I put my XP2100+ onto my original 1.33 Athlon mobo,an Asus A7A266...and it
runs very nice...

No need for 5Ghz cpu etc etc :)

What's the key combo to bring up the fps counter?

The top hardware today will SURPASS the desired results (22 cars, 50 fps,
1024x768x2xFSAA).  My guess is that you can achieve CONSISTENT 60+ fps at
higher res/fsaa (1280x1024x32-bit, at LEAST 4xFSAA probably 6x) with an AMD
2600+ and ATI 9700 Pro.  I run 30fps start of race and 40+ around the track
with an AMD 1600/GF4 Ti 4400/1280x1024x32-bit.and a full field of 35 (18
visible) cars in GTR 2002.

Considering the extra 1 Ghz of cpu (above mine) and amazing video bandwidth
of the 9700 Pro, 60 shouldn't be a problem.

The voodoo 5 is your big bottle neck. I'd start there with an ATI 9500 pro
or a GF4 Ti4200 which are both in the $200 usd range.  If you got the bucks
go for a ATI 9700 or GF4 ti4600 which are in the $300-$400 range. The ATI
9500 pro is suppose to be some where in between the Ti4400 and the Ti4600 so
in a bang for the buck choice its probably the best one.

The F1 2002 key combo doesn't work for GPR 2002.  I run "FRAPS" in the
background to get my fps.  You can get it at www.fraps.com.  It's free, it's
small, and it works on every 3D app.

MadDAWG speaks the truth.  You will turn your system into a new machine with
a Radeon 9500 Pro, or a GeForce4 Ti4400.  I'm going to be purchasing a 9500
Pro in the near future.  I found a place selling them for $155, plus the
next version of Riva tuner will unlock their pipeline, and in essence, turn
them into a full fledged 9700 Pro!  Hard to turn that down.

Caution John:  You cannot turn a 9500 *PRO* into a 9700 Pro; the 9500 Pro is
hardware 128-bit and will not reach 9700 Pro specs.  The Riva update and
w1zard update are already out there for the 9500 NON PRO which shares the
same PCB as the 9700 (256-bit) and simply has 4 of the 8 pipelines disabled
via software so it's basically a 9700 Pro underclocked (due to inferior ram)
and bandwidth stripped (4/8 pipelines disabled due to possible defects).

The software enables the OTHER 4 pipelines and IF they are FULLY FUNCTIONING
then you get NON PRO 9700 performance out of the NP 9500.  If you have a NP
9500 with some good 3.3 ns inf. ram you may also try to overclock it to 9700
Pro specs (using Warp 11 bios): this combo of software unlock AND
overclocking will yield 9700 Pro performance.

So far 70% success rate for software NP9500-NP9700 (the 30% failure rate
attributable mainly to those who previously hard modded their NP9500 and/or
those with 1 or more defective pipelines).  Overclocking to 9700 Pro further
reduces success so NP 9500 to PRO 9700 is probably a 50/50 proposition.
It's a great deal if it works; if not you're stuck with a mediocre NP 9500.

What is your highest minimum framerate in GTR2002 ??

Actually, the way to tell if the V5 is the bottleneck is just turn off the
2xfsaa and see if your framerates go up.  If so, there is your quick fix
solution until you update your graphic card.  If not, then the V5 isn't the
bottleneck.

Your system is not that far off balance between the cpu and graphics so
replacing one will only create a big bottleneck.  What you should really
consider is replacing both cpu and graphics simultaneously.

There's a lot of hot air in this thread.  I don't think even a P4 3GHz could
maintain 50fps in a full field race.  I tried it on a friends Athlon XP
2400+ and 9700 Pro and the fps counter dropped to 24 at Brands Hatch at the
start of the race.  This was just using default graphics options at 1024x768
with no AA.  My Athlon 1800+ & Ti4600 was doing about 19-20fps with the same
setup.  On 'Test Days' with no AI cars, the fps counter never drops below
70.

Have they fixed the messed up textures with the 95/97 pro's?  My son
has the 9500 pro and some of the***pit textures are missing...the
exterior views all have extra textues streatching from different parts of
the car.  3.0 Cats with dx9.

Joe,

Thanks for the information... it really makes sense.  I've just read a blurb
on this at a Russian site, and it was a bit unclear what they were trying to
say.  They also mentioned the 9500 NP trick you describe.  I've got some
more homework to do before I opt for the 9500 Pro, especially after reading
Dave Henrie's experience with missing textures!?  And this card is getting
such rave reviews!

Thanks again!
