The volume level for my N2 is pathetic compared to N1. Is this just a
problem at my end or is this common to everyone?

Don't forget to turn the volume down when you race formula 1.  You
have a common problem.

if you have the sound turned low in win95 it will effect the sound in the
game
even if you are playing from a dos prompt

On the same note. If you exit to DOS before turning up the volume, does
anyone know an easier way to turn up the sound short of restarting Windows?

Adjust the spotter audio level to control this as documented on page 29
of the U.S. manual.  Bring the spotter audio level to below 50% to
adjust his voice audio up/down.  Above 50%, this setting decreases all
other sounds relative to the spotter's voice.

This is not true if you are playing from a completely clean DOS setup
(ie. "restart the computer in MS DOS mode" or hitting the F8 key at
Windows 95 launch.

No problem here with volume. Check that you don't have the
spotters voice set to loud ( Make it around 60). The higher
the spotter voice the lower the rest of the sounds are set.

I tried this method and then the engine noise drowned out the spotter
to where you couldnt hear him
