GPL - RPM-Limit

Hi everybody,

yesterday I tried to drive using the Novice-Damage. But, after a few laps,
my engine blows away. I noticed when shifting the RPM go very high for a
very short moment (I'm accelerating till the Red Limiter). But looking at
the opponents I see
they make the same acceleration but the RPM doesn't go higher when shifting
like me.
So what's the problem, what do I have to do.
I'm using a T2

PS: Sorry for that poor english.

Thanx in Advance
Andreas

Lift off the accelerator when you shift, just as if you were using a
clutch.  It takes a little getting used to, but after a while it becomes
second nature.

The red line isn't a limiter, it merely records the highest RPM the engine has
reached, and you've pushed too hard if you're blowing engines.

Reduce the point at which you shift, and LIFT the throttle when you do.

I wish I could tell you the max. safe RPMs for the various cars, but I'm still
working that out.  Anybody else have them figured out?

These are the rpm limits I use
Eagle, 9500
Lotus, 9000
Brabham, 8500
Ferarri, 8500

None of the other cars are worth driving (IMHO)

A rev limiter would sure make the learning process with the GP car much
easier.  I'd stay on the track a lot more if I could "lop off" the top
1500-2000 rpm.  I suppose it's time to start playing with the gearing.

Hi Andreas.

The problem is that when you shift you are keeping your foot on the
gas. Just as in a real car, if you did that the engine would
immediately leap to maximum revs. When you depress the clutch for
shifting you remove the load from the engine. This maximum revs
stresses the engine which eventually dies.

What you need to do is take your foot slightly off the gas just as you
change gear, and this keeps your revs under control. This takes a
little practice to get the timing right, but soon becomes automatic.

Cheers!

hard limit, and try to shift about 1k to 500 below. However, I'm not
always sure where they sit on the fuzzy tach dial. :) The telltale is
always past vertical at the end of a race. (Yes, I lift on the shift. It
happens on the downshifts, I think.)

The numbers are:

Hi Andreas,

(English is fine, btw)

As others have said here, back off the throttle slightly when you upshift. And
when you downshift, keep your current speed in mind, so you don't overrev the
engine when you re-engage the clutch.

Something which really helps me is my control setup.  I use a Thrustmaster
joystick for steering/transmission, and Thrustmaster aircraft rudder pedals for
throttle/brakes.  I was unsure of the pedals at 1st, but they work great,
because when you push one down, the other comes up & vice-versa.

So, if I want brakes, I stomp the left pedal hard, past the mid-point.  But
when I want to shift, I pretend it's a clutch, and just tap it slightly while I
hit the shift button.  That backs off the throttle enough to keep me from
over-revving, and adds a more realistic feel to the experience, IMO.

If I was using standard car pedals, I couldn't do that, since a tap on that
left pedal would give me instant braking action, instead of just backing off
the throttle slightly.

You're missing a treat. The Coventry may not be the fastest car in the
world but it's a real good learner's car and a little honey to drive.
I've done a 1:27 at Zandvoort in it, so while not up at the level of
the Lotus it's still no slouch. That and the fact that it is so much
easier to drive could win it some race when your opponents are falling
of the road in their Lotus, Ferrari etc.

Cheers!

Thank you all for that information.
I had all the NEW F1-Racing/Cart Sims which had never the problem with
shifting.
But I'm practise as much as I can have nearly the same times like before
with no damage
(and letting the right foot on the pedals)

says...

You have yo lift the throttle when shifting, unlike other sims that
simulate "semi-automatic" gearbox....

Hope this helps!

Sounds like you are driving as you would a modern F1 car
with a semi auto paddle shift system.
This is 1967 with manual gearchanges and quaint things
called clutches.
Try backing off the throttle during your gearshift as you
would in a real manual road going car. Better still, try
driving your road car, without backing off the gas whilst
changing gear and see how many miles you get before it blows
up. :-))

Mark

Wee!!!! Makes a nice little decorative design on the road, don't it! :)
In real life, though, if you're fast enough, the engine doesn't run away
that much. Must be my cat-like reflexes I guess.

In real life you don't have 400 h.p. and an ultra light flywheel just
waiting to be released. (At least I hope you don't.)  ;)

Hey, I don`t even use the stinky clutch when I change gear ;-o
