the ATI Fury?

The raw performance figures for the ATI Rage Fury are not so dismal,
especially in 32-bit mode. The potential is there.
I have played GPL with a compact Mach 1 joystick, which fits nicely in a
travel bag. Perhaps my dream of playing GPL on the road is getting closer
to reality.
I appreciate your post, and the ones I will receive, trying to lead me
down the proper path for 3D. I already have access to a VooDoo equipped
desktop. My question is really just if there is any hope of running GPL
on a Rage *Fury* under OpenGL, as it would influence my buying decision
for a notebook that I am going to purchase. If there is a chance of
running GPL on it, then I might splash out for a model with the ATI chip.
Does anyone have a PC with the Fury chip as OEM? Care to do a little
experiment with it and let me know if the GPL OpenGL beta works?
thanks
Stephen
: i had an ati rage pro turbo on my motherboard. these cards suck. they do
: render D3D ok, but not openGL. just get a voodoo3 and you'll be fine.

This is the first I've heard of anyone getting OpenGL GPL to run on a
non-Nvidia card. Congrats to ATI for actually getting their ICD up to
snuff. I wonder who'll be next: 3dfx, Matrox, or S3?
Have you tried the MirrorsEvery setting in core.ini? The README from
Papy's OpenGL patch says that this is necessary to achieve good frame
rates on the TNT because of an unoptimized bit in Nvidia's drivers.
If it doesn't help on the ATI card, then that shows that Papy is
probably right that this is Nvidia's fault. (Of course, turning
down the mirror refresh should help a little on any card, but it
makes a really dramatic difference on the TNT.)

: Well shit! I just tried changing the mirror refresh settings and it made a huge
: difference. I had left it at default before.
: Mirror refresh 1 every 4 and same graphic settings as previous post:
: 1024x768 - 30-34 fps with a few spots showing 36 around SPA, that's with 7 other
: cars in the race.
: 800x600 - 35-36 fps same settings
: Mirror 1 every 8:
: 1024x768 34-36 fps with around 30-32 fps with other cars in the pit area.
: With the mirror at 1/8, it really blows, a virtual slideshow in the mirror. Not
: great at 1/4 but still tolerable. I've gotten used to the beautiful mirrors on
: the Glide version (best looking mirrors on any game, period).
: If I had to play this game on the ATI, I would rather use the 1/4 mirror and
: play at 800x600 rather than mirror at 1/8 and resolution at 1024x768.
: Still, the openGL driver for the ATI is tuned for Quake3Test (or any other quake
: games), just like the Nvidia drivers.
