NR2002 on home LAN (laggy)

by (Rich8 » Thu, 21 Mar 2002 02:40:06

Has anyone setup NR2002 on a home LAN?  I've got a two computer peer
to peer setup using a NetGear Switch,, 100baseT.  Both machines are
AMD 900Mhz with a min of 256MB of RAM... Using GeForce 2/Radeon 7200
vid cards..

I am able to host a race, when I connect with the 2nd machine, once
I'm at the track the other cars (A.I. cars) are quite laggy, as if I
was racing on the Net via dialup connection. Cars disappear etc..When
going around the track they are a bit jerky,,etc.

If I just run the host computer car and remote computer car I dont'
notice any lag during the replay..

but with 20 other A.I. cars it gets bad quick..

On the Host machine everything looks great,, smooth as glass..  The
cat5 cables running to the swtich are about 15 feet long...

Tried several other games, mostly FPS they work ok,, no lag problems..

thanx..

I've never seen any problems on a LAN, but are you using TCP/IP or IPX?
For a LAN, IPX is usually recommended but if you don't have IPX
installed or you just want to use TCP/IP instead you'll want to edit
your CORE.INI and disable this line (change the 1 to a zero like shown):
net_use_mdm_bandwidth_for_tcp_ip=0

I have seen something simular. I was hosting a race on one machine and
racing on my game box. Now I had other people connecting from the web as
well, but I got the "thruput fell..." and got booted twice. Now its not a
perfect match to what you have set up, but its still across a LAN.

Eric ,

I appreciate the reply your suggestion worked liked a charm.. And yes
I am using TCP/IP, I'm going to install IPX and mess with that a bit..
Once again thankyou very much.

FWIW, using TCP/IP with that line disabled should effectively be the
same as IPX since both will be using the net_lan_* settings in the
CORE.INI (without changing that line TCP/IP would use the default
net_mdm_* settings).
