Really wacky problem with GPL

I'm having a really weird problem with GPL. Soon after I start
driving, usually 3-5 minutes. The screen freezes but the sound
continues and I can still control the car ie the revs when I push the
accelerator and I can hear the car hitting the wall. I need to
CTRL-ALT-DEL to get back to the desktop and everything's fine. I can
then restart GPL and drive until it freezes again and the whole
process is repeated. I have tried several different glide dlls (2.50,
2.53, the hacked one that speeds up the side mirrors) in the GPL
directory but there is no change. My system is as follows

GPL 1.1

192 Megs Ram
V2 SLI with latest drivers
MX300 with latest Aureal Reference Drivers (2040)
DX7 installed
Logitech WFF

Everything else runs fine just this prob with GPL. Has anyone had a
similar prob or does anyone even know what the hell could be causing
this?

Thanks

Luke

Must be your screen saver or another program that wants to display a window.

My screen saver is disabled and I only have the WFF profiler running
in the background. Anyway, I have since tried the OpenGL patch on my
i740 card and it works fine with no lockups at all. The only problem
is there is major flickering and visual artefacts in the menus and in
the top and bottom of the game display. The actual game looks fine and
runs faster than I expected on a i740. Obviously there is a problem
with my 3dfx drivers. They are the latest Creative 3D Blaster drivers.
So I dont know what the prob is with them.

I just realised, when I ctrl-alt-delete there is something called
"papywindow' or something similar in the taskmanager box. After I
close that 'gpl' apears in the box. This sounds like an error window
is comming up but I cant see it and this is what is freezing GPL. Does
GPL have any kind of error logging so I can see what happened?

I had this exact problem and in my case it was somehow caused by local
Windows network. Solved it by removing the Client for Microsoft Networks
from Control Panel's Network settings. Don't ask me to explain any of it.
The only answer I've managed to get from the administrators is a laconic
"Windows networks plain suck" comment.

Still, I had the client installed for at least 3 years and it was only
last summer that I started having these "freeze-ups". My neighbor also
experienced the same problem. No idea what actually caused it, maybe some
network component (or Linux guys) gone wild? If you got the client
installed but don't depend on sharing folders/peripherals in your LAN,
give it a try.

Hi!

Had the same problem as you. Was caused by overheating V2. Open your
computercase and check if your V2's still have their coolers on their
chips (if any were mounted). If so, try to cool them with an additional
fan or underclock them to 85-80 MHz. Both ways should work. If the
coolers have become lose, try to fix them first.

Bye!

Had this problem too and fixed it.  I think it has to do with heat buildup
on your Voodoo II.  I found that by turning down the Voodoo II refresh rate
from 90Hz to like 65Hz seemed to fix it for me.  Fortunately didnt seem to
make much difference in the frame rates.

I had this problem and thought it was a cooling problem of my Voodoo 3000.
I put some fans on it and it didn't help.  It appears that it happens if I
run at 800x600.  If I run at the resolution below that (640x480?) or the
resolution above that, I have no problems.

I had similar problems a while back when I still had a V2. My problems
were caused by the V2 overheating. Try reducing your V2 / CPU
overclocking to cool it down a bit (or use better cooling for your
computer).

Damn, looks like you could warm the house using those Voodoos. At least
that's the impression one gets reading this thread. Anyways, for those
experiencing this problem AND not using a Voodoo card, try that network
thing, sure worked for me.

I have the same problem much too often on my Thriller 3D. I just changed the
network settings, hopefully it will work! If so, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Thanks for all the response. Ok, i'm running my v2s at the default 90
mhz and the case fan at the bottom front of the case blows straight on
them. However, this morning I removed the Client for Microsoft
Networks and it all seemed fine. I got to race for about 15 mins and
then it happened again. I played straight after putting my computer on
so it seems that V2s were cool and then when they heated up, freeze.
Its strange that no other game is having probs but i'll try some extra
cooling and see what happens.

I used to have no problems at all whilst I had my V2 running with an AMD
k6/300. I was able to run it at 90mhz and was thinking of o/c it to see
if it would improve things.  However, just over a month ago I upgraded
to a k6-2/450 and new motherboard and since then I get this problem
also.  I've had to reduce my V2 to 85mhz to avoid this happening quite
alot.  What bugs me is why there should be such a difference in heat
problems caused by changing processors. :-(

Do you have your video card overclocked?
