GPL: Really annoying problem

by Andre Warrin » Thu, 16 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Very often GPL crashes when I start a race. When I hit the green
button to start, GPL changes to the 3d mode, and then it crashes.
I can't really describe what I see on the screen when it crashes. I
see the menu, but in 1024 resolution, and it's corrupted. Really
weird. I then have to quit with C-A-D.

I also have this when I go back to the menu after a race. As soon as
it changes back to the menu, it locks up.

I have this maybe 1 out of 10 times, and it is so frustrating.
Yesterday I had a wonderfull online race at the ring, and after the
race I wanted to save the replay. I pressed escape, and GPL locked up
again.

I have a Voodoo II SLI, drive in 1024 resolution, and I have the
latest Diamond drivers and Glide 2.53 installed.

Any suggestions would be VERY welcome...

I have the same problem with about the same frequency. I'm told by those in
the know that the problem lies with the Voodoo2 SLI's. Others who have had
this same problem have switched to a Voodoo3 and the problem has gone away.

Glad to hear that this is a known problem, but isn't there a 'install
driver xx.xx' driver solution?

Not that iv'e heard Andre. Since GPL does not utilize the power of sli perhaps
you could disable it?
I am no tech expert, try posting on some of the site forums and VROC chat.
btw, i see what you meant, amazing.

Just a thought, try the 3dfx reference drivers instead. Don't forget to get
rid of the Diamond drivers first though.

I can't offer any specific advice as I'm a TNT2 user, other than to say that
all my gpl video problems come and go as I experiment with different video
drivers,  so I would suggest to maybe try some different ones.

AFAIK, you don't need the 2.53 glide.dll with GPL 1.2.

I have tried different 3dfx drivers, but no luck so far. What I didn't
do was to uninstall the diamond drivers first. I'll give that one a
try. And the reference drivers, are those the drivers found on
www.3dfx.com?

I did install different drivers, but no luck so far. I was hoping that
someone else who had the same problem allready solved it.
Someone said it was a specific SLI problem. But I want to keep using
my Voodoo II SLI, because if I only use one Voodoo card, I can't play
in 1024 resolution :(

GPL: Really annoying problem

by Rob Adam » Fri, 17 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I've been watching this post for a while, too chicken to mess with my (working)
Diamond Monster II SLI setup, but I finally bit the bullet. Download the "DirectX
7 beta" driver for Voodoo2 from www.3dfx.com, and unzip it to an empty folder.
Then do a Find for "glide" on all your hard drive partitions. Replace any glide
files you find with the equivalent ones from 3dfx. In my case, this updated me
from glide 2.54 to glide 2.56.

I have 2 12MB Monster 3DII's running SLI, on a Dell PII 333 with 128MB RAM, and
here's a before and after:

Before:
N3: 30fps alone, 20-25 in pack, with 12 cars ahead and 2 back, anti-aliasing
turned off
GPL: 36 fps alone, 20 at start, 30 in moderate traffic. Cursor remnants all over
screen in menus, lockups every 3rd day or so in menus.

After:
N3: 30fps all the time, 16 ahead, 3 behind, anti-aliasing turned on
GPL: 36 fps alone, 25-30 at start, 33-36 in traffic, no cursor remnants, no
lockups (so far, I just did it last night).
Graphics in GPL also look clearer.
Unreal Tournament and Half Life also look better, but no numbers to prove it.

HIGHLY recommended update. Looks like Diamond isn't going to support 3DII
anymore, so might as well rely on 3dfx for driver support.

GPL: Really annoying problem

by Andre Warring » Sat, 18 Dec 1999 04:00:00

What a coincidence Rob, I downloaded the beta drivers a few hours ago,
installed them, and indeed no lockups so far !!!!
I'll keep my fingers crossed untill I tested it at least a couple of
days, but this looks very hopefull.
The only thing I didn't do is replacing the gpl glide 2.53 driver with
the 2.56 one. If I get a lockup, I can still try this, but it doesn't
seem necessary so far.
I haven't tested any fps improvements, gonna test that right now.
Thanks!

Andre
