Jason's right. You'll need to play it for a while to see what is
different, other than obvious, superficial things.
To be honest, when I first ran some laps at Imola after installing, I
could see that I was going to like the game.
Its that feeling you get when you know something is a step-change from
what you've been used to. When you know you've got something really
cool, and its going to take ages to really get to grips with it. But
when you do, you know its going to be worth it.
The same feeling as when I played Indycar 500 for the first time, then
Grand Prix 2, then GPL.
I liked F1 2002, and I was prepared to live with the basic faults,
like the silly levels of grip in high corners, the Gran Tourismo-ish
tracks, the unconvincing AI, etc. Frankly, despite all that, it was a
cool game; much much better than F1 2001.
And the fact that you could tweak virtually any significant parameter
of the car, and also many aspects of the game that yoy can't in GPL is
also a huge attraction.
F1C has, in my view, made another massive leap in the physics of the
ISI series. And lets face it; that is what really matters. Talented
Modders like SBDT can make any number of improvements, but unless the
basic physics engine is good enough to convince players, its always
going to be compared to GPL.
Perhaps I've missed it, but I haven't heard many people moaning about
how "its no GPL". Have you?
It doesn't really matter anymore -- because the physics model seems
really good.
